Beginner Problems when Sketching in ZBrush

I couldn’t find a beginner forum so I hope this Main Forum is the right place to ask. Thanks for your time.

I’m trying to understand sketching in ZBrush 4 and find it very frustrating. Here are some things that I don’t understand:

  1. Everytime I hit Quick Sketch, the plane has a different color (white, black, grey, red). Why/what for?

  2. When the plane is grey, I sketch and hit Ctrl+Z, it suddenly becomes red. Why?

  3. Just picking a color is very painful. When I think I selected black from a color picker field’s corner, the stroke has a red surrounding. However neither the primary nor the secondary color are red. I never had problems sketching in other applications but ZBrush is puzzling me. Is there something simple like swatches in 2D applications that give me a predictable color? How can I be 100% sure I’m working with black or grey and no Saturation?

  4. Am I the only one with these beginner problems or is it that complicated?

Welcome to Zbrush.

I am afraid I haven’t used the Quick Sketch yet but there are tons of video tutorials out there in the Zbrush classroom and the Zbrush Wiki is really kool.

I can’t find any videos on sketching with the quick sketch method, just hundreds of videos having zbrush, sketch and quick in their title. Is there a way to search the Classroom?

It doesn’t have to be Quick Sketch, just sketching in 2D in general. And picking colors etc.

Zbrush has a programme called Paint stop you should check it out

Zbrush also allows you to illustrate in 2.5d, but I haven’t got around to looking at that bit yet.:slight_smile:

Hi there,

I’m also interested in the quick sketch feature but I encounter the same problems as mentionned previously. I browsed the zbwiki and the zclassroom but I found no comprehensive tutorial on how to use efficiently this feature.

Can somebody help ? A link on a tutorial could do.

I saw that Gnomon has a free video on the color pallette/picker, to me the worst part of sketching in ZBrush, unfortunately it’s a dead link now.

I’d also like to see a tutorial on sketching.
