Basic ZBrush materials [Answered]

Is there a repository of basic ZBrush materials anywhere? I have noticed there are a lot of matcaps but if I understand correctly these don’t work correctly with BPRs due to baked in lighting information. So are there any good custom basic materials available?

Thanks

Boozebeard,

The nice thing about the basic materials is that there are so many variables at your control that you can create innumerable new materials. You have the freedom to change their settings to suit your need. Now, if editing materials and shaders is new to you, I admit that it is a steep hill to climb. If you are curious enough, you will figure it out, and you will have a leg up on many other Zbrush users in the community. This is a sadly overlooked area in the Zclassroom training. I still struggle with it myself. But once you get your feet wet, it is kind of addicting. Who knows, maybe you will be the one to start a new download section for custom basic materials! Start with something simple, then move on to the double shader, and so on. Exploration is one of my main battle cries to my students at Studio Arts in L.A. Try to get back to the mindset you had when you were a kid. Kids start button mashing and horsing around, because they don’t pressure themselves to be a genius. They are just fooling around. " Wow, I wonder what this slider does?" No pressure. That is where most major strides happen. Try it out. What can it hurt?

It’s on my to do list (along with a million other things) want to try and stay focused on other stuff right now though. Have a nasty habit of bouncing between so many different things I never get anything done properly

There’s nothing wrong with using MatCaps with BPR. You just need to remember that they have lighting baked in, so when setting up lights to create shadows (for example, on the floor) you need to make sure they are from similar directions.
