Basic mesh question?

Hello everybody,

I have to ask… what is an average poly count for a full body monster basic mesh? Because I’m killing myself trying to make a “good” basic mesh in XSI and I end up with a pretty cool one but that has like 5000 polys -without the head-

On the other hand XSI as some basic meshes to start from but the poly count is up to like 7000.

I’m no where near to make any animation but I’d like to keep the possibility open for the model modeled in Zbrush.

Any kind of insight would be very appreciated :+1:

Lopoly about 5-6K
Mid about 10-20K
High about 100-150K

A reasonably capable desktop machine can handle about 1.5 million polys in ZB. Every sub-division of a model quadruples the number of polys, so some simple maths indicates a model starting with 6,000 polys can be sub-d 4 times before it hits 1.5 million.

Some of the guys who specialise in head modeling hit sub-d level 6 or even 7, indicating starting poly counts of 400 or 100 respectively, or very powerful machines and higher starting points.

Of course, all this may change with ZB2.5. And you’ll always be restricted by other programs choking at different practical poly limits, if you’re exporting to render or work on the structure outside of ZB.

Hey Guys,

Lemo, thanks for ranking -always a lifesaver-… finally I’m going trough the basic mesh and it’ll probably end up like 5k, so thanks!

Moochie, thanks for the insight :+1: I wonder if the very high poly count in ZB2.5 will be proportional to amount of available ram like in ZB2… if in ZB2 you would need like 2G for a good performance at 5 million polys, imagine how much ram you would need for 22 million polys

Thanks guys
