Basemesh and how it relates to a Retop'd Mesh.

Simple question, (and most likely a stupid one) when you bring a basemesh created in Maya, and you sculpt on it to a point where your getting poly stretch and compression. Then at this point, it gets retopologized to create a new mesh with better edge flow and poly distribution. Doesn’t this new retopo’d mesh make the original basemesh obsolete because the retopo’d mesh becomes the “new” master mesh with proper edge flow and etc…? At that point why would the original basemesh ever become a factor going forward?

It wouldn’t unless you needed to go back to it for some reason.

Thank you, thats what I thought. With the trouble I’ve had lately it seems I’m second guessing everything.

Sometime, it’s easier to model something out without worrying about topo,
so that ya can get the mesh with the form that ya wanted in a rush.

Then, the retopo come into the picture as it create a functional base mesh on top of retaining the form that ya created.

But again, it’s more production efficient to make a fully functional base mesh in the 1st place.
