Baking Displacement Maps going all black and white...

Hi there,

I’m new here but I use zbrush for a while, mainly for photogrammetry.

The thing is… lately, as I export displacement maps, they come black and white and while using them, there are a lot of spikes and are totally unusable…

For the process:
I upload a high res mesh, duplicate it, in the second one I zremesh, uv it and then start to divide and project all until it reaches the amount of polygons of the original one.

Then in the multi map exporter, I export normals, mesh and displacement map… on the displacement map i’ve experimented it almost all the options and combinations but it always exports me the map in black and white and not in grey’s tones…

when i open 3ds max and render the object on vray, i follow step by step this tutorial:

http://www.cggallery.com/tutorials/displacement/

but the displacement always gives me lots of spikes and problems it cant be usable at all…

something i’m doing wrong… ?

It would be useful if you gave a few more details, such as an image of your UVs, if you are exporting 32 bit or 16 bit displacement maps, and what level you have set for generating the displacement.

hi there,

i’ve already tried in 16, 32… exr… always gives me identical maps such this one

on this particular image the subdivlevel is set to 1 and then the dpsubpix to 4
mid to 0 and adaptive On all the rest is not touched

That looks as I would expect. There appears to be a good range of detail. If you set Mid to 0 then the background of the map will be black (no displacement). A setting of 0 is good for 32 bit but for 16 bit you should probably set to 0.5 because otherwise you won’t get any inwards displacement. Use 32 bit if you can because that will give the most accurate results, though note that you won’t necessarily see much when looking at the map in Photoshop because the range of potential values is so great.

thank you for your reply, however using this method (32 and exr) when importing to vray in 3ds max it causes lots of spikes where it displaces… however i’ll try to use Mid to 0.5 to check if that’s ok… because i think thats the only thing i didnt change

I think you need to check your settings in Max. I can’t help with that but I would think that you are displacing by more than necessary. The map you posted doesn’t have any obvious burnt out areas.

probably is that… the thing is that by default vraydispmod in max gives 2,54 cm of displacement…

probably is that thing that is causing all this… because there isn’t any big displacements to make… just tiny stuff and that is most certainly making it go crazy… thank you
