Backfaces of mesh intersecting

I had backface masking turned off, and made a thin piece of geometry for a leather boot. I went too thin, and now both sides are stuck together and I can’t separate them. I only noticed they were stuck together after doing a lot of work.

Is there a way to separate the mesh again without undoing everything?

Thanks.

What if you mask the entire mesh, then go to the Subtool palette > Extract, set a thickness and hit the Extract button? That should create a new thicker mesh and you can delete the old thin one.

You may be able to use Polygroups>Group Front or Group by Normals to create separate polygroups for the back facing and front facing portions of your mesh. You can then Ctrl+Shift+click on a polygroup to hide the others and use Geometry>Del Hidden to delete the part of the mesh you don’t want.

Your replies gave me an idea, and I fixed the problem. What I did was just mask the “stuck together” area, and extracted it. Merged the extracted subtool with the original boothleather subtool, then dynameshed it. Then I just sculpted it back to the desired thickness.
