There’s never been a time when I want a brush to influence the geometry behind what I’m sculpting on. Is there any way to have backfacemasking on every brush by default? Thanks!

I found really handy to have the BackfaceMas button in my UI so i allways know if is active for the brush selected
Same here. A custom UI solves lots of personal preference issues in Zbrush. Simply enable customize in the Preferences>Config panel, and Ctrl-Alt drag the “Backface Auto mask” button from the Brush > Auto Masking menu to a slot somewhere on your interface. Switch off “enable customize”, save the UI out somewhere so you can recall it if need be, and hit “Store Config” to have ZB load that UI on startup. I have things like Backface masking and lazy mouse on my UI so I can see their status at a glance. You could also hotkey it for easy toggle.
There are definitely times I don’t want Backface masking on, like sometimes during polypainting or cloth manipulation.
