This was an insanely fun project to wrap up 2019. I had less than 6 days to make a fully CGI baby Yoda from scratch for the New Year issue of the Hollywood Reporter. Turns out that’s quite a lot of work!
I sculpted his head from scratch in Zbrush, zremeshed it and then used UV master for the UVs. I reprojected the high res details into normal & height maps in Substance Painter, where I also did most of the texturing. For his robes, I used Marvelous Designer as I wasn’t 100% sure on the final pose, so this allowed me to reposition his arms…etc. without remodelling everything.
The scene was put together in 3ds max and rendered with V-Ray. The fur on his ears and stray hairs on the fabric were created with Ornatrix.
Given the tight turnaround (and the struggle to find reference!) I’m really happy with how he came out. Happy new year!
