Audiodoc's Anatomy Studies & Random WIP's

[color=cyan]I’ve spent the last month learning 3Ds Max and Zbrush as best as I could, and I have so much yet to learn and improve on. I thought it would be a good idea to have a thread to post my various anatomy studies I’ll be engaging in, and other various projects I do.

Hopefully with the vast amounts of talented artists on this forum, I can get some good advice and improve.

With that, I’ll start this thread off with a Hand study I just completed. This was my first time modeling a hand, it was made with zSpheres.

Thanks everyone!

Its looking great for a first attempt at modeling a hand… Its looking a little bit flat and the fingers are a little bit squareish … :+1:

Hey thanks!

I noticed that about the fingers too, I should’ve spent a little more time on the general form, but I wanted to kind of sketch something out real quick to get a general idea of where I’m at.

I’ll be sure to fix that in the future

Love your Old Imam btw!

Here’s a quick sketch I did today. Trying to grasp the structure of the face, ugh I have so much to learn.

I find it especially hard to correctly work out eyelids and lips.

Anyways, here’s my “attempt” at a human male head  , gotta start somewhere right!

Update:

First true anatomy study, trying to sketch out the underlying muscles and structure of the face. I think I did okay, learned a lot which is good. I still have a touch time realistically sketching out the muscles of the mouth.

Took another crack at a head using what I’ve learned. It turned out a lot better, but I still have a ways to go

I think it’s looking very good now. Very strong features without going overboard into a superduperhero face. I only see a couple minor things that take away from how good the rest of it is.

The area just under the eyes probably needs more flesh to make a more standard ‘zoro mask’ around the eye area and the chin needs some slight reshaping I think, either to round it downwards into a curve/point or make two points and a dimple in the middle. The tip of the nose and where it meets the nostrils and the ears could probably use minor touchups, but it might not be worth the effort.

Thanks so much for taking the time to comment. I’ve noticed the same things you did and I agree completely, the purpose of the sculpt was a quick sculpt (under 30 mins) to see what I could do with what I learned off the top of my head. With that said, I’m going to probably blow it out into a full upper body bust so I’ll definitely change the things you mentioned.

Thanks again!

Completed a quick male torso study today, took about 45 minutes.

I’d love if some of you experts could take a quick look and put me on the right track. Something seems off with the shoulders to me for sure.

Anyways here goes!

Me again.

I’m no expert but they seem to post less often and I’m studying anatomy these days so I’ll give it a shot.

When you look at the shoulder, from a 45 degree front angle on someone muscular or well define, you’l see that the largest muscle runs down from above the collarbone to the midpoint on the side of the arm beyween the bice and tricep. Your chest muscle really goes under this into the arm, not over it, if that makes any sense at all. You need to make it flow around the chest.

The anterior deltoid (towards the back) is also going to be much lower, and there will be an area in between wih little mucle in it.

Everything runs up into those big muscles that come down from the neck to anterior deltoid so to get things right you probably really need o put them in or the shoulders will always look odd. I suspect that’s what’s really throwing it off as the shoulder shape now is pretty decent.

You also may be starting off your bis/tris too large but it’s hard to tell without the whole arm there.

Belly button may be a bit high, too. Everything else looks good, though.

I included a pic because I don’t think it’s easy to explain in words. Green means good/where to have muscles and purple means where things seem off. roughoutline.jpg

Hey thanks for the reply, that really helps!

Audiodoc,

Looking good so far. I have also been studying the heck out of anatomy for the last few weeks, and I figured us noobs can learn together.

I was going to do a paintover, but, I really suck at 2D. Lol! So I fired up ZBrush, loaded up SuperAverageMan, and beefed him up a little.

The toughest parts for me were the point where the biceps duck under the pecs at the armpit. (Top of image). Took a while for me to figure that one out. A little more tweaking and I think you’ll be there. And one thing that I have learned about the delts is that they don’t insert at the mid-line of the arm. Its actually pushed toward the biceps by the mass of the triceps. And that they insert about halfway down the length of the biceps.

If you get the chance, buy Z. Petroc’s anatomy DVD. Best darn resource in the world. So very worth it!

And I know that some things are off on my sculpt, but I have to admit that I did it without references. Bad, bad me!

All I can say is what most of the best would tell us…study, study, study and practice, practice, practice!!

I’ve been working a lot on my anatomy and think I’ve improved a bit. I’m currently doing a WIP on one of my favorite characters, Moon Knight. Here is what I have sculpted so far. Look forward to crits and comments as always.

Nice work. I really like the upper body sculpt.

Thanks! Love Mantis man!

I need some help here on this one guys. I’m moving along slowly, got a basic pose down but I want to get the cloak in before I go any further. And for the life of me I can’t figure out the best way to approach making it.

Does anyone have any tips/technique/advice for the cloak/cloth I need to through on this guy?

You can see what I mean in this image.

Anyways here’s the update, I still have alot of areas to fix after I through on the cloak…

C & C Welcome!
