"Aspiring to be a 3D artist" I need experienced advices...

Hello “central-community” this is my first thread
I am trying not to be boring - please give me a chance

So, from many years from now i started wondering what was really important for me to do in the future, i started using blender 3D (free) and as many of you here i dream to be a 3D Artist - mostly a 3D Artist. The problem is that i can`t live only by “a dream” and i have reached the time when i have to make a decision, i am about to end High School and i am really becoming anxious about it… So i could get zbrush about 3 days ago and i am really “floating around”, i mean i have already learned the basics of the interface, of course i am not a pro, but i can say i am starting to get “comfortable” with it - so thats not the problem.

For me, the real problem, is that where i live, Portugal, i don’t have any type of options for CG training, zbrush wise i really have nowhere to go!!
What i want to know is if today being a “self taught person” is not getting me anyway because of technology moving faster and faster… i know some options like the new the “Gnomon Workshop On-line Courses” and "Digital Tutors" (this second one seems more starter indicated from what i have searched) and what i wan to know is, if you wish to tell me, how did you got into the industry or started learned and all the tips that you can give me on how to start learning zbrush effectively - I know there are a lot of posts like these but i really felt like i had to do this for myself and get a “updated” answer from the community…

  • Is it worthy to be self taught - i mean “on-line and DVD taught” today?
  • Where should i trust my money to study/learn zbrush ?
  • What should be my work-flow: Zbrush created mesh (like simple poly spheres or Z-spheres)? or base-meshes created in other 3D packages? (maybe this second one would take mora time, because i am not that good on blender, character wise…)
  • In how many time should i see my models starting to get “halfway-decent”? (presuming i will not be a lost-case :P)

Thanks for the time, you don’t know what you are doing for me!!!

Sorry if i sound too boring, please people i just want “hear” something…

Hi! I am self taught in Zbrush, online training and zbrush central were all that was necessary for me to take my traditional background having finished academy of fine arts, and jump into it getting a full time job I didn’t even dream about how good it can be, and also getting steady freelance offers.

Good luck!

I am also self taught in Zbrush. Whilst I am not a pro, I do do freelance work.

I honestly think there are more free tutorials out there than anyone needs, you just need to search them out, and spend real time practising Posting here to get hints and critiques. The one thing I would say about Zbrush as opposed to a traditional 3D app, is an artistic grounding definitely helps, especially if you want to do anything organic or human. So if you don’t have that grounding, that’s another thing to add to your list of things to learn. There are some very good books out there on Zbrush too.

I recommend Zbrush Digital Sculpting Human Anatomy, by Scott Spencer as it is good for anatomy and for Zbrush too.

Main thing is spend time on sculpting.

Ok, much apreciated!!

And congrats for your awesome work, it really shines!!

Thanks, Robb, the more people have told to practice the more “lost - in how do i do this? and that?” without even trying, but now i think i am starting to believe that with a lot of practice i can actually dream in being really good, so thats for enforcing that on my head!
Very nice gallery as well, love the detail on he soldier!

Kcimor: Ola!

I’m also living in Portugal and will write in english since this is not a portuguese forum. The only physical realistic option for you is a school that exists in Lisbon. Are you from Lisbon? At the moment I’m not really sure if these school is good or not since I’ve seen mixed results in some students that attended it.

Altought they have a Zbrush course they will probably talk you into taking drawing fundamentals, etc… Before you even see the light of Zbrush you’ll spend 1000+ euros. But some do need drawing fundamentals of course.

Hmm… I believe there are some online courses that are top notch but do pay attention to the requeriments.

If you want to talk more about the school I mention drop me a private msg so we can talk portuguese.

Thanks, man!
I have seen your gallery, maybe you are new to “this” too? keep it up!
*Sure ill contact you
