As a 3D Artist, do i have to make....?

Hello guys,

until now, i dont know, what a 3d artist has to know, for the work. (if you want to work in a game company)

I mean, i know how to sculpt in zbrush and a little to texture in zbrush.

BUT, what i dont know until now is, how to retopo and make a game model from a high poly.
It is my response, when i work in a game company, to make a retopo and to texture the character and to rig him?

Im very angry about that situation, for example, if i show the company my portfolio with sculpts. (Yes finishes sculpts, but NOT textured, only BPR render)

They see, that my sculpts are good, but they see, i cant texture at all. Or in WORK, i tell them, that my experience with texturing is very low, so they will kick me from the company.

Before all that happend, i want to ask you…

what i HAVE to know, when i want to work as a 3d artist, to prepare myself.

What i know is…

-Keyshot

  • Sculpting in Zbrush (anatomy) (but im not good at making hands and feets)(i learn)
  • Render in Zbrush, compositing in Photoshop
  • 3dsmax (more than basic)
  • Unwrapping in zbrush and paint per texure on the model with polypaint
  • Marmorset

What i DONT know…

  • Rigging, Animation, retopo , unwrapping in 3dsmax, bake normals, dont know, how big the textures has to be (for all textures).

The biggest thing is that i have made a break in my life. I have stopped studying in university, because my father got cancer , so i have paused my university for 4 years. He died later. After that, my mother becomes handicaped , so i take care of her.
Until now, i take care of her, i go shopping for her, speak with all docters for her, phone for her, write for her, i have to help her to eat. Everything i have to do for her, like in the past with my fathers cancer.

What i want to say is, that i take care of my parents in all these years, and i have paused my studying for them.
Im really angry, that when i write down the story in my portfolio, the game companys or the boss would not take me, because they see, that i have stopped my university for my parents and that my lifeline is not good, like from others candidates, and that the companys or employers would see that negative.

Now im learning 3d and 2d everyday for 9 hours, to get back the time, i lost and it works!

Sorry for my loonnnnggg story

What i can say is, that i learned a lot in 3d, while my parents were ill. I have always learned 3d while the illness at home.

This profession/hobby/calling is very unique, mainly in it’s combination of artistry and technology. Someone who is just a great artist cant do it without the technological background while at the same time it doesn’t matter how much technical knowledge you have if you have no artistic ability or talent. A 3D artist is unique in the combination of the necessary skill and flare needed to make a stunning 3D Rendering or Animation.

The tasks of 3D Artists can be broken down into a few:

Modeling Texturing Lighting Animating Compositing

Modeling is the creation of 3D Mesh to form shapes. These may be the walls, windows, doors, roofs and solid features of a building as well as smaller things like furniture and decorator items. In fields outside of architecture it could be a character, a car - ANYTHING.

Texturing is the application of surfaces to the 3D mesh to simulate real materials. Textures may be made from photographs or can be totally abstract. A finished surface may actually be a combination of many textures that simulate features such as roughness, transparency, reflection, diffusion, specular, illumination, etc.

Lighting is the placing of 3D light sources within a scene to simulate real life. Just like reality there are many different kinds of lights that also have many different features. Complete books have been written on 3D lighting, as have on other parts of a 3D artist’s job.

Animating is the addition of movement within a scene. You may want to read our descriptions on 3D animation, character animation and camera path.

Compositing is the blending of real life video or photography with the 3D scene/objects. A movie or finished rendering doesn’t need to be all 3D, in fact sometimes it is best if it is only partial. Camera tracking is a perfect example of this.
