Artifacting after using bmap stencil

Hi, im getting annoying artefacts after sculpting through a stencil that I’ve created.

I created a stencil using an alpha I imported photoshop (attached) but no matter what I do I always get this strange banding.

Is there any way I can overcome this?

thanks for any help

Make sure the alpha is a 16 bit grayscale and not 8 bit.

Hi, when set as grayscale zbrush won’t let me import the alpha :-/

Bring it into ZBrush as a .PSD file (photoshop document) grayscale 16 bit…

just to confirm, im using the alpha as a stencil, and painting through it with blank standard brush. Ive got a feeling this isn’t the best way to do it? (as im basically applying it in layers). Is there an alternative? (sorry for the noob questions  )

hi - did that, but now I’m getting a different kind of effect :-/

ooooh. so ive found that if I apply the alpha using DragRect it works perffectly, however DragRect is still a little hard to predict exactly where to position the alpha. The great thing about the stencil is that I can precisely place it where I want it to go…

It’s easy enough to do with a little practice. While holding down Ctrl, select the DragRect Stroke and your Alpha. Draw it out off of the mesh on a blank part of the canvas. You can draw it to the size you want and it will stay at 90 degrees. Do not let go of Ctrl . While still holding down Ctrl, hold the Space Bar down to move it over the mesh. While still holding down Ctrl, you can let go of the Space Bar to scale it again, press Space Bar to move it again. The only drawback is that you can’t rotate it.

thanks - ill get some practice in
