Apply alpha mask to top surface of plate only

Hi. I want to apply an alpha mask to the top/face of a plate and not have it appear on the back. I can’t seem to figure this out.

Hello @dshaneschuldt

Try using “BachfaceMask”. While holding down Ctrl, select your Alpha and then in “Brush > Auto Masking” enable “BackfaceMask”. That should prevent the mask from being drawn on the opposite side. Alternatively, you can use “Ctrl + Shift + Alt” to hide the back.

Thank you. I’ll give it a try!

I tried both sets of instructions above. "While holding down Ctrl, select your Alpha and then in “Brush > Auto Masking” enable “BackfaceMask… I did not find Auto Masking in Brush or the subsequent Backface mask.

Ctrl + Shift + Alt hid the front and back.
I am using 2022.0.1 version on a mac. would this make a difference?

Note: BackfaceMask is on a per brush basis. If you switch brushes, you will have to enable it again for each brush.

You would have to switch to a side view and hide the back only. Though this can be tricky if the mesh is thin.

Okay, I found that option and activated the Backface MAsk button. the results are the same unfortunately. The mesh is only about 4-6 mm so I don’t think I can hide it successfully from the side view due to how deep the plate is.
I did find that after applying the alpha mask, rotating to the mack I can brush on and mask out the back with the BackFaceMAsk.
So, I did get my objective accomplished at the end of the day with your help.
Thank you!

It does work, even on an extremely thin mesh. Make sure it is enabled while you have the mask brush selected (while holding down “Ctrl” (“Command” in your case))
