Any BasRelief pros here?

I’ve gotten the basics down of creating a BasRelief. However, whether using the Alpha tool or Projection tool… the ‘side walls’ of the relief are all vertical.

How do you all tend to make a more refined BasRelief effect? Where the relief Z sidewalls aren’t so vertical/straight up… and do you do some slight sculpting work to make parts of the relief more pronounced or pushed back?

BasRelief tends to make all the details at the same relief height… I’d like to figure out a way to get more hills/valleys in the relief, vs a ‘plateau’ like relief

Thoughts from any community members???

Please help!

thank you

This is actually a deliberate feature of Bas Relief projection. You may wish to use traditional alpha projection or traditional subtool projection if you want the end result to be less uniform depth.

If stamping in your projection as an alpha, then it is subject to the grey levels in the alpha image. Traditional alpha rules apply. So for instance an alpha with a softer transition to black along the lighter portions of the image will produce a more gradual edge transition than a high contrast image. Blurring the edges of the alpha would often that transition, resulting in more of an incline to the edges.

The brush being used to stamp in the detail, the level of ZIntensity, the settings for the alpha in the alpha palette, and the Alpha > Modify> Alpha Adjustment will all influence the look of the drawn out alpha.

If using Bas Relief projection in the Subtool menu, setting a higher contrast value will produce more deviation in height.
