Answered: Vertex order problems and Poser

I’m having problems creating morphs for Poser. I’ve been reading in this forum as well as others, and I’ve discovered at least one thing I’ve been doing wrong (exporting the entire mesh from Poser rather than individual groups one at a time).

The problem is, the vertices are still getting put out of order at some point during my workflow. I’ve tried a few different things, nothing seems to resolve the issue.

This is what I’m doing now.

  1. export each body part as a separate .obj file from poser.

  2. import the first body part (typically the head)

  3. draw the head onto the canvas, and switch to Edit mode

  4. using Subtool Master, import the remaining parts as subtools

5)Using Subtool master again, merge the subtools so that they can be edited at the same time.

  1. Sculpt

  2. export each individual body part one at a time

  3. import the parts as morph targets on the poser figure

  4. Set the morph dials I just loaded to 1 and watch as the mesh explodes.

I understand that I could load and then sculpt on each part individually, but that means I would have to avoid sculpting anywhere near the seams, which severely limits what can be done, and makes symmetry on the limbs particularly difficult. Is there no way to be able to sculpt on the body as a whole without messing up the vertex order? And, is there any way to fix the vertex order on a sculpt that has already been done?

Thanks!

Goofy

Edit: I almost forgot, in case its important.

I’m using ZB 4, and Poser 7

I’m not a Poser user but I thought that you needed to export the whole mesh from Poser rather than individual parts. There’s a thread here that you may find useful: http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthread.php?t=87032 .

Thanks for the reply Marcus! Unfortunately, importing the entire mesh is what I was doing at first, and it was still messing up the vertex order. Is it possible that some of the sculpting brushes do anything to alter the vertex order? I wouldn’t think so, but if others are able to import and export w/o this happening, it would seem that there is something specific that I am either doing or not doing that is causing the problem. From my recollection, I used the Move and Inflate (both additive and subtractive) brushes the most, though I also relied on the Smooth, Clay, Flatten, Slash and Pinch brushes as well.

I had read that thread previously, and it definitely contained some good info, but it didn’t seem to apply to the exact issue I was experiencing. That being said, I’ll give that script a try and see if keeping the grouping together will help the vertex order problem as well. I’ll let you know what my results are once I get the chance to try it after work today.

Thanks again!

The sculpting brushes won’t change vertex order. It’s the export/import of meshes that change vertex order because different programs will order vertices differently. But that can apply to any application in a pipeline.

Well, unfortunately, importing the figure as a whole unit and using the plugin to export it did not eliminate the vertex order problem, though the plugin looks quite handy if I can ever get the issue I’m having worked out.

Are there any tools available to help correct the problem I’m having?

Thanks again!

Goofy
