Answered: StartupHotkeys

Hi I’m on mac mountain lion.

When saving my StartupHotkeys they dont get saved anymore where they used to be saved in the application root. Usually they are saved in my: /Applications/ZBrushOSX 4R4/ZStartup/HotKeys folder where i want it to be saved.

But i just changed to a new computer and reinstalled zbrush, now the hotkeys file gets saved separately to another folder location on my disk:
/Users/Shared/ZBrushData/ZStartup/Hotkeys

I’d like to have it stored where it used to be because everything i do in terms of customization gets saved in the application root zstartup folder and i have everything collected there which makes it sweet.

I’ve checked my permissions, fixed the ones that seemed off. this didnt solve the problem. Deleted everything, uninstalled, reinstalled, moved all my old zstartup stuff to the freshly installed zstartup. tried everything but still the StartupHotkeys.txt file is only altered in the new off location on the disk.

can i get it to work like it used to be?

thanks

thanks for bringing up this issue! I am sorry, I have now answer for your question, but I do share your concerns about the two different preset locations; Because it doesn´t make any sense if part of your custom data is in one folder, and part of it in another folder…

ZBrush 4R4 should always save hotkeys to the ZBrushData directories. The change was made in 4R4 to use this location because OS developers really don’t like programs to save to their own folders and subfolders anymore. If it was previously saving to the ZBrush directories rather than the ZBrushData directories, that would have been a glitch.

You can of course save hotkey files anyplace you want on your computer, including in the old location. However, the startup hotkeys that ZBrush automatically loads at launch does need to be in the ZBrushData directories instead of the old location.

thanks for both of your replies.
maybe my old preference file was pointing it to the old location in app root zstartup on my old computer with 4r4.
now atleast i know nothing is malfunctioning.

id like to point out from a standpoint of the described reason by aurick, which does makes sense to me because no other apps save and store stuff in the app root, that it would even make a bit more sense to stash it into user account/Library/Application Support/ (Pixologic/ZBrushData/ZStartup/Hotkeys) folder where all other developers store settings such as these. the users/shared folder is really not used by anyone else and is outside the users account.
