Answered: Importing obj/maya file into zbrush

ZBRUSH HELP PLEASE!!! I noticed whenever i use goZ or even import a model into zbrush, i have missing geometry. Not sure why this is ocuring? For example, I’m doing a mouth with teeth that has some objects that are duplicated, (ie: different teeth) and some of the teeth come up missing in Zbrush. I tried deleting history and converting all instances to objects, however the problem still persists whenever i try to import my mesh from maya to Zbrush. Does anyone know a way around this, or have a solution for this? Any help will be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you.

Are you sure they’re missing? Try turning on Tool >> Display Properties >> Double to see if they appear. If they do, the problem is simply that the normals are flipped rather than the geometry actually being missing.

PLEASE HELP! Every time I try to export from Maya to Zbrush, parts of my geometry is missing. Whether I use the goZ feature or I export as an obj, my geometry either comes in misaligned, missing, or messed up (ie: missing faces). In maya I have some teeth duplicated and tweaked a bit, so I’m not sure if thats the issue, however I deleted all history on all objects and made sure that I converted all instances to objects before exporting. No matter what I do i can’t import my mesh properly into Zbrush. Is there any solution to this problem, and am I doing something wrong here? Any help will be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Maybe you can try this.
1st Check out your normals.
Then select everything and combine. Then export to Zbrush.
In Zbrush in the Subtool palette, go to split and select split to parts.
So you can have all your pieces separatly.
I hope this can help you.

By the way, have you tried to export something else, from a new scene. Maybe a couple of cubes just to test.
Maybe your scene was corrupted.

did you try display properties > double and or flip ? sometimes they are kind of inside out with back face hidden due to mirroring - importing between apps ?

WOW THANK YOU SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH!!! It worked perfectly :+1:

Thanks everybody soooooooooo much for the help! It wasn’t actually the normals or splitting each object into parts, rather going to display properties and clicking the double (thanks Gary). I really appreciate the help guys, thanks a ton! :+1:

Hi mid1701, I just want to add one more comment. Maybe it can help you in the future. When you dont see properly the mesh in zbrush, and hit display properties > double. The main reason is because you have your normals flipped in maya.
Everytime I model in maya. I make sure to turn off Double side lighting. you can see before export if you had some normals flipped.

It really was the normals being flipped. Double tells ZBrush to render both sides of each polygon. This made the reversed polygons visible – they’re still reversed, but can now be seen because both sides are being rendered.

also, when using GoZ, take are of having files with unique model name and more improtant, no white space in the model name:
Your scene have “teeth 1” and “teeth 1” in maya, then rename to “teeth_1” and “teeth_1b” or whathever
