How do I get rid of file/folder nav bar that always shows up when I start Zbrush?
I don’t want to just click hide. I want to make it go away permanently since it covers the work area.

It’s called LightBox and what you want is to turn off Preferences >> LightBox >> Open At Launch. Be sure to save your UI after that by pressing Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+I.
You will still be able to open and close LightBox whenever you want it by clicking the LightBox button above the canvas or pressing the ,l shortcut key.
LightBox is a very useful tool because it shows thumbnails of everything that’s in a particular folder. That’s quite handy when you’re browsing for a specific brush, texture, alpha, etc. Not only that, but double-clicking on the icon of whatever you want will then automatically load it into the appropriate palette. That saves you the trouble of opening the desired palette, clicking Load, browsing to what you want, clicking items one at a time to view their icon until you find the one you want, and finally loading it. In fact, some items (like Fibers Presets) won’t even have thumbnails in your OS’s browser. But they do have very nice thumbnails in LightBox. :)
