Answered: Can't subdivide! zBrush 4

As the title says, I cant subdivide my model. Anything I create from zspheres/zsketching cant be subdivided, why is that?
I can subdivide the standard primitives as much as I want with Ctrl+D but not my own creations. They are very low poly (about 800 active points), I can only do 1 single step down with Shift+D. Why do I only get that? The Geometry tab looks somewhat different from the standard primitives too.
Take a look at the screenshot I attached.

I really need some help fast with this. Cant learn anything new if I don’t get past this.

tool>make polymesh 3d (use on primitives)

tool>adaptive skin>use on zspheres

tool>unified skin>use on zsketches.

after you perform these operations you’ll need to select the proper mesh in the tool list (makePM3D will auto select it I believe)

All of this is covered in the zclassroom if you haven’t viewed the getting started vids yet. Link in the top left of the ZBC UI

sidenote: try not to swear. I understand you’re upset, but I almost didn’t reply to you because of it. Don’t get me wrong, I swear like a sailor and have to leave the office if we have clients coming in…I tend to let things slip. But when you’re typing you have time to think and write out an intelligent comment. There isn’t any real reason for saying a “bad” word.

Sidenote 2. I don’t think any words are actually bad, some are more socially acceptable than others though. In the words of anyone from Battlestar Galactica. “Frak you, frak this, frak that, frak me.” Somehow this is acceptable. I’m pretty sure it is the meaning behind the word, not the actual word. But eh. Anyway, I’m not a Mod, and I have no right or reason to tell you what you can and can’t do. Just giving a little advice, take it or leave it. I’m also bored right now, which is the only real reason I’m writing this crazy long response to the whole 3 lines I actually used to answer your question

Well it actually worked! Thanks a lot, I guess my mistake was the fact that I used Make Unified Skin for my zSpheres.
I actually did watch the videos in the classroom, about 7 times… (Thats where most of my confusion comes from)
I think they’re terribly bad. They do show you everything you can do but fail to explain why you do certain things, which at least for me is what makes me learn and remember something.

Then the UI as a whole. I don’t see why you need 3 different categories (adaptive skin, unified skin, what was the last one again?) I think it could have been done with one and the same with proper scripting. Very different and confusing, especially if you come from Autodesk or something like that.

And yea, thats where the anger and cussing comes from, using a program thats so much easier only to fail on its complexity, kind of ironic.
I’ll take your advise, I’m usually a calm person but wasting 4 hours on this really got the best of me.:o

Thanks again, really helped me a lot

The reason why you can’t subdivide at this moment is that you’re still working with ZSpheres. Even though you might turn the Preview on, the model is still being generated by ZSpheres as opposed to being fully editable polygons.

With ZSpheres, you set the number of levels using Tool>Adaptive Skin>Density. You can then use the Tool>Geometry menu to step between those levels in the preview.

It’s only when you skin the model (using either Adaptive or Unified) that it becomes fully editable polygons. After skinning using either method, if you then select the new model in your Tool palette (rather than the ZSphere model) you will see that the Divide button is available.
