Ancient Material of a long time ago

Hello everyone! I recently open an ancient ZBrush modeling, and he has a Material loaded automatically (surely the Material that I’ve saved with the model) but I don’t know what is its name…and maybe it’s not a Material bydefault in ZBrush, maybe I ve been downloaded it somewhere…Anyway, maybe can we “capture” this material and save it ?

Hi @SURMULOT ,

Well, it depends.

Is the file being loaded as a ZTL, or a ZPR?

A ZTL or Tool file, saved through the Tool menu, contains only the geometry of the Tool being saved. If a material has been applied to that mesh the only thing that is saved with that file is the ID slot of that material. ZTLs do not store cutstom material info.

So the program will display whatever material is active in that slot in that session of the program. If the ZTL is loaded into a fresh program session it will simply display whatever the default material for that slot is. If you’ve been making changes to the default materials in that session and modified the material in that slot, it will display that modified material.

In other words if you load a ZTL, whatever material you see displayed on that mesh is already in the program.

A ZPR (project file) on the other hand stores all scene information, including modified material information. The custom materials are embedded in the file itself. In this case it is only a matter of saving the material out with Material> Save. That custom material can then be loaded into any program session to overwrite another material.

Hey bro Spyndel!!! Thanks!!! You are the creator of ZBrush or what?!!! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

It"s a ZTL

I work for the creator of ZBrush

Ok, so restart ZBrush. Load the ztl file into ZBrush, draw it out and enter Edit mode. Go to the Material palette and use the “Show Used” button. This will show only the materials being used. The Flat Color Material and the Startup material may always show up, but any additional materials shown should be the material slots that have been applied to the mesh.

These material assignments may change between ZBrush versions or with user modifications. Its possible that the material you’re seeing was not the original one used for the mesh–it simply occupies that slot at the present time. Identify which material is being used. Theres no need to save it out. It loads with the program.
