Ancient Greek Medicine . . .

‘Evening all . . .

I was reading an article about the ancient Greeks & their Medical Practices during the ancient Greek Wars. I’m was really impressed how advanced they were, in the field of medicine. While I was reading I ran across an article about the Greek Physician on the battle field & his medical tools. He wore a Helmet during battle, that contained a large quantity of “Ouzo”, which was used for the injured to help ease the pain. All he had to do was tip his head forward & a dose of Ouzo was poured into the mouth of the fallen Greek soldier. After so many, the poor soldier didn’t feel any pain, or really feel anything at all. Ohhhh, the good’ol days!!! Heheheh. Actually, the Greek Physician also gave himself quite a few doses of the Medicinal Ouzo after a long day on the battle field.

Anyway, after studying the picture of the Greek Physician’s Helmet for quite a while, I felt the urge to duplicate it as much as possible, I tried several times until I felt I had an image that would do that Greek Physician some of the justice, that he well deserved.

The image below is an accurate recreation of his Medicinal Battle Helmet, minus the Ouzo. I hope you enjoy it, for it’s a real piece of Ancient Greek History. Have a good one . . . Mark.

PS: ( I hope that Chris doesn’t read this post, I sure wouldn’t want to corrupt him in his future career - although I’m sure he already has one of these Ouzo Helmets & probably uses it frequently??? )

We’ve seen his work, Mark. He’s definately already corrupted.

As for the pic, WOW. There is so much to like here. The intricate interlocking of spirals is really nice, both in the glass and its support. The glass itself really has a feel of authenticity. My favorite part, though, are the horns. Between the texture and the bumping, they could have come right off a bull. I should know, having grown up on a Montana ranch (no bull!).

Great job!

well im not really into the great med. thing nor have i heard of this practice… but i really do like that image and model… maybe you could show us some of your work… thanks

heh-heh, aurick and mark. yes, I am considered corrupted by normal social standards, but that’s what being an artist is about.

as a medical student, though, I haven’t had the chance to do stuff like that. maybe they teach you when you take the Hippocrates vow (ie when you finish medicine).

I don’t know. however, I must say I was caught off-guard at this one Mark. the model is excuisite as always, my admiration of your space-placement skills grows, MIP by MIP (day by day)

however, I have no idea which wars these would be, and I’m certain that Ouzo, the foul tasting wine extract that all greeks drink, for some reason, hadn’t been invented yet.

so you see, my friends, this has been very interesting to me. maybe mark and I can do a little research, and then Mark can come up with some more little-known greek stupid contraptions

hippocrates swearing  (photoshop, I’m afraid)

quote:
a greek artist is a surprise, considering the amounts of spirits the buggers drink

Very cool.

   what a fragile helmet! they sure had to be handled with :ex: care & i hope these physicians minded their heads when entering somewhere or when the barbarians threw their stones.

another fantastico one, Mark! very inspiring and full of spirit

I am enamored with the horns. Great texturing there.

:+1:

I wonder if the “medicinal” helmet led to the “beer” helmets of our time???
 :stuck_out_tongue:

What a neat story! I would expect that a Greek Physician’s life expectancy on the battlefield was counted in minutes. I know if I was on the opposing force I would head directly to the nearest source of Ouzo to make the battle go much better.

Quite possibly this helmet is the fore-runner of those ones that we see today that hold two beers with straws leading to your mouth.

Nice work! :+1: :+1: :+1:

A Beautiful work Kruzr…You really have the ZBrush talent to create any image --even this mythic Ouzo spritzing helmut !! a wonderful artistic invention !!

What a great party hat. I have a feeling that things like this are still in use in college fraternities. Really great modeling on the glass, and that spiral in the middle reminds me of that medical symbol (cadduceus?) Maybe this is where they got the idea for that logo

Nice image Kruzr, and an interesting bit of information. I love the details on the hat, and it really looks nice with the background image.

superb image Kruzr!..where could a guy get one a’those doooooooood ! :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue:

I Love this image, Kruzr! The color and design of the glass is lovely, the horns are outstanding, the golden implements are very nice, as are the twisted steel rims on the hat. Way COOL! :+1: :sunglasses: :+1:

Good modeling Kruzr. :+1: Those twisting shapes look really good. (As well as the purplish look to them.) Great horns too.
