Anatomy Exercise (Nudity)

Hello everyone,

I've decided to stop lurking and finally post. ;) I have been trying to study the human form for a while and decided that I'd like to try a few exercises in surface anatomy to get a better grip on all of it. I also thought that perhaps some people in the ZBrush community might want to join in and give it a shot with me. Here's what I've been doing:

 • Find a nice anatomical reference photo
 • Take it in to your favorite image editor
 • Try to identify all of the visible surface landmarks, and sketch them the best you can.
I found a lovely website that has an abundance of such photos at http://www.characterdesigns.com.

Here is the first photo I selected: []![SurfaceAnatomy01_Base_02.jpg|700x1050](upload://nwNM6KdlmGcE7PZQ5o3t0vlNkv8.jpeg) (Thanks CharacterDesigns.com!) I took this photo into my favorite image editor and created this: []![SurfaceAnatomy01_BnW_01.jpg|590x969](upload://uoPJ9xQguZJ2KEWVYKIopukeUlQ.jpeg) I created that by trying to trace the muscle groups, fat deposits, and bones. Here is the overlay with the groups separated by color (red for muscles, purple for fat deposits, and blue for a few bones):

It's not perfect, but that's why I'm asking for help. :) And here is my attempt and naming the surface landmarks that I've identified:

And there we have it! I had a blast with this exercise and will definitely continue to do so until I understand exactly what I'm doing. I'll post some of my sculpts soon and we can watch them improve as I do more of these exercises! Heh. Please note that this was a quick sketch so some of the shapes are a little rough. ;) Critiques and Critics welcome! I would like to know what I have misidentified so that I may improve my future sketches / sculpts. Thank you, -JonSnow

*Edit: Fixed the images. Uploads were being all screwy. (Also changed tags from ATT to ATN, just figured that out)

Ah, this is a good idea. I dunno why I never thought of it before.

thanks for the link…:+1:

have been working on a female model myself,

btw the muscle you have labeled “flank pad” should be the “external oblique” muscle… if my anatomy serve me well.

@KillahPriest: Feel free to try it out and post your own exercises right here.

@Morph Division: Thanks for noticing that. I just looked it up in one of my favorite anatomy books, Atlas of Human Anatomy for the Artist, and noticed that the lower half of that section is referred to as the “Flank Pad” and the top half is referred to as the “External Oblique”. Perhaps the flank pad is slang for the shape that the external oblique takes in the lower half. Time to do some more research. Thanks!
