Alt+Click: Fit Mesh to View (Annoying)

I use Alt+RMB in order to move my view around and I often need to make minute adjustments, such as when I need to align my mesh perfectly to a Spotlight reference image. Sometimes I click quickly and this results in the Fit Mesh to View triggering and undoing my painstaking adjustments. Fit Mesh to View is bound to the F key by default, so there is no reason that it should also be bound to Alt+Click. I’m guessing that I can’t unbind Fit Mesh to View from Alt+Click since the default navigation keys can’t be changed. Is there a fix that can be applied or do we need to wait for the devs to allow the changing of the navigation keys? At the very least, they should unbind Alt+RMB from Fit View to Mesh and leave Alt+LMB alone if they want to keep it.

If you’re wondering why I don’t just hold Alt and drag my mouse button in one go, my tablet pen gets jittery when I make very fine adjustments. This doesn’t happen when using my mouse, but switching from pen to mouse often isn’t very economical.

There are many settings as well as many methods of doing things. Image planes can be used instead of SpotLight. See Through mode ; Perhaps a different UI would enhance your workflow. Feel free to look at what I’ve done with mine and download if you wish. There are many files in the thread, some were updated since the original posting. Link below.

Try Preferences:Interface:Click time, and or Click Distance

alt+click doesn’t frame the view in my zbrush. I’m assuming there is a setting somewhere, or I removed it from the keybindings, but I could be wrong. I’m pretty sure alt clicking doesn’t frame but goes into Solo mode, but only if you’ve turned it on.

For some things you’re not going to be able to use the pen without frustration/hair loss. I use a Wacom here when not using the trackball mouse. I know it breaks the workflow a bit.

Thank you so much–this works perfectly. Decreasing Click Time to 0.01 prevents the Fit Mesh to View from triggering no matter how fast I click LMB or RMB while holding Alt.

I didn’t realize that there were so many threads that answered this question already, but I guess my initial searches turned up nothing due to the keywords I used. According to this thread, turning down Click Time and Click Distance to minimum values also disables the use of Alt+Click to select different subtools. This isn’t a problem for me yet, but it might be in the future. I really wish the devs would just get rid of Alt+Click affecting the view framing.

According to this thread, Alt+Click has been framing the view ever since ZBrush 3.5. You might have Click Time and Click Distance turned down and, if this is the case, your Alt+Click subtool selection shouldn’t be working. Could you verify? I would be interested to know if there is a way to turn off Alt+Click frame viewing without disabling subtool selection.

Thanx for bringing up this topic…

turning down Click Time and Click Distance to minimum values also disables the use of Alt+Click to select different subtools. This isn’t a problem for me yet, but it might be in the future.

The “alt-click select subtool” has definitely screwed with me in the past - I’ve ended up inadvertently adding all kinds of strokes to subtools that aren’t even the ones that I think I’m working on. Then I have to try to figure out how many undos I need to scrub back through.

It doesn’t happen a lot, but it’s nice to know how to disable this if need be.
