alpha pattern question

I am trying to paint a chainmail pattern onto my model as shown in the picture below. However, I need the pattern to not “re-paint” the pattern as I brush over places I have already. Otherwise it will end up looking like where the line connected to “NOT GOOD” is. I want my pattern that is pointed by “GOOD” to be the pattern consistent throughout.

Is it possible make zbrush not paint over places I have already done so? Or do I have to just be careful and paint?

Thanks

Store a morph target (Tool>Morph Target>StoreMT) and then use the Layer brush. With a morph target stored, this brush will not build up on top of previous strokes.

Or a even better way, go to the lowest res, take it to whatever softwere that can do uvs, add a nice uv unwrap on the parts you want to add the alpha, then do a nice tileable alpha, or get on from the net, and then just use the displace option to displace the pattern.
This is the best option i found, i use it a lot, since you dont have to worry about the transitions betwen brush strokes and it will look pretty natural. You can fi the seams by hand leter or hide them in a place you dont see. If you need more details on this method try replying fast, i will probably forget about ths thread in 2 days ;f

god i love this paintstop :laughing:small_orange_diamond:laughing:small_orange_diamond:laughing:

The Layer brush uses the stored state as the base. It then adds any new strokes on top of that stored state. You’re storing the first lines as part of the stored state, which means your third stroke is getting added on top of them.

You have to store the morph target before you draw any lines.

lol my stupidity is limitless :laughing:small_orange_diamond:laughing:small_orange_diamond:laughing:
thx aurick one more time u r saving lifes :+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:
cheers

Thanks for the help everyone. Regarding the method slocik talked about, how would I do that (especially the displacement part)? I use 3ds max primarily for modeling, unwrapping, ect and do have a nice tileable chainmail alpha.
I think I might have found some tutorials that describe the process, however, they use Maya in them, which is not what I use.
