Alpha Brush & Copyright Question

Hi Guys,

Wondering if anyone can clarify me on copyright law and creating alpha brushes for fine detailing.

Say I google an extreme close up pic of an orange and use it to make an alpha brush for pores.

I know that anything labeled “Labeled for reuse with modification” or “Labeled for noncommerical reuse” is safe as long I properly credit the owner.

Is there any specific law against making alpha brushes from copyrighted photographs. I figure that any semblance of the original picture will be lost. Do I need permission from the owner?

Also, where do you guys find textures?

Sorry if this is a silly question and thanks for taking the time to read.

Hello Mike

I can’t and won’t speak to the legal issues regarding the use of copyrighted material. You use any such material at your own risk. As an artist, I support other artists trying to protect and profit from their work. If you are concerned about this, you should seek legal advice from qualified legal sources. If you have questions regarding the use of Zbrush, we can help.

I find a flatbed scanner is a great way to generate textures. Simply scan a piece of wood, fabric or leather, and it’s all yours.
