All subtool materials affected by current selected material.

I love Zbrush! My first post.
I have multiple subtools each with unique Mrgb’s. All have had FillObject perfomed on them. The scene looks great as long as I have a white material selected in edit mode. If I select another material ie a reflective material or a material with color other than white, Every subtool is affected by this material. The subtools don’t completely change to this material but are a blend of the subtool material and the now selected material. Selecting Flat Color is the best as it seems to have zero effect. However the Zbrush to Photoshop plugin complains if I use Flat Color. I am expecting the subtools filled material to stay as they were filled. Some of my subtools are painted using a texture with spotlight. Others are just a material. This is preventing me from moving forward learning my Zbrush skills and hurting my brain. I feel I must be missing something basic. Any help would be fantastic.

See below the only difference between these are the selected material.

I’ve been experiencing similar problems. I’m using polypaint to apply MRBG data to subtools, and when I switch materials on a subtool it switches materials on all my subtools - even though they have their own MRGB data assigned. I can change subtools and switch materials back, but it’s very disorienting and data “stickiness” seems hit or miss. This happens with subtools that are comprised of a single material as well as subtools with a mix of materials.

My process is typically:

  1. Select subtool
  2. Make sure MRGB is selected
  3. Select primary material and color
  4. Fill object
    a) At this point all subtool materials will change
  5. Switch to paint brush and do some work
  6. Switch materials and colors to continue working on subtool
    a) Other subtool materials will change
    b) Sometimes other materials in the same subtool will change, sometimes not
  7. Switch to another subtool
  8. Select its original material
    a) Other subtool materials will change
    b) The materials for the previous subtool may be stick or may change

Very confusing and frustrating. I think I’m using the software correctly, but appreciate correction if I’m doing something wrong. I’m also wondering if there’s an issue with the integrated graphics card on my laptop, a wimpy Macbook Air.

Thanks!

I spent more time working with Polypaint on my current project last night, and I think I’ve figured out how to avoid the problem - although I’m not sure why what I was doing didn’t work. The trick (at least for me) seemed to be avoiding the MRGB setting altogether and setting the M and RGB data separately. Setting M, assigning a material to the model, then setting RGB and painting colors seems to work without doing weird things to the other subtools. Similarly if I want multiple materials on a subtool I use the paint brush to apply it to parts of the model manually or via mask/apply.

I did notice that Merge Down doesn’t appear to respect material assignments in the merged subtool, which is a bummer, but I can imagine why that might be a limitation of the software.

So the moral of the story at least for me is avoid MRGB. I personally think that’s a bug, but at least I know the workaround now.
