Alienboy and Flog: The movie!

Hey ya’ll !

I descided to start posting some of my characters.
For the longest time I have been working on an animated feature and looking for modellers and 2d artists.

I found the 2d artist and a few modellers but nothing always consistent.
I started modelling the characters myself for a biweekly animation series.

Here are some of the characters. I wish I was a better modeler but afraid I’m not. Personal ability can only take you so far…but I hope my characters are cute enough to make the series look good.

Tell me what you think!

Here is what I wish they looked like though.

I’m going for a cartoon but really detailed cartoon look.
Basically mixing realistic comic book style with funny proportions.

Hey if you know of any modellers who can do this one justice I’m willing to do a trade of services or give them a giant comic book collection in return. Over 1000 comics!

hi themightyflog,

i like your character drawings… :+1:

to be honest i don’t even think you will need zbrush to model the characters of your style… I would stick to some basic box modeling in 3dmax or xsi and get use to moving the polygons first… but i guess it won’t hurt to use zbrush since there had been some really nice cartoon characters modeled from zbrush.

your drawing is really nice tho

unless you are an amazingly freaky fast learner and phenom traditional artist, you have a long way to go before modeling all the chars for an animated feature yourself… i would either postpone this idea till i learned what i needed,
or hire some 3d artists, can you animate? do you have great animators? is this project funded?

if you do insist on learning and modeling this yourself the best advice i can give is “look” look at your concept piece, dont just model what you rember, just a glance between your model and the concept i can see in the concept his hips are well wider than his head, on your model, they are not. thats not something thats a problem in model skill, its just not looking at the subject matter,
in the concelt the head tapers from really small at the chin to huge at the top, the torso tapers from small at the chest to huge at the hips, almost hourglass shape.

again i’m not saying give up learning to model if you want to be a 3d artist, but if you ever expect this to be finished i would think of some other alternitives

i blumped this out real quick to show a bit of what i’m talkin about, this is far from “good” hands are too small an some of the head to body ratio is off, but maybe it will give you an idea where to goab.jpg

Hey Rhinokio, that was pretty cool what you did with Alienboy!

I loved it. I’m not to worried about capturing the exact style of the sketches. I’m really looking to combine comic book style with Tekkon proportions.

Something like this
http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthread.php?t=71808&page=1&pp=15

My characters in a similiar style.
Funny proportions with some slight realism and detail. It’s a big undertaking this movie but something I’ve been working on for several years.

Most of that time was settling on a story and then committing to it. Then finding the style and buying items I need to get it done.

I even have a MOCAP system which I’ll use for speed purposes. Here is an animtion I did

<STRONG><object width=“425” height=“344”><param name=“movie” value="

Here is more Alienboy pictures. I hope I can get this movie made.

I hope this peaks some of your interests. I do need modellers and would love to collaborate.

I don’t really have any money.
A few things I can offer. I have a large comic book collection with everything from Y The Last Man to all the Spiderman’s and a ton of books, like Osama Tezuka novels and the like. I have a ton of them. Bought them when I had money before I lost my job.

I can also offer free MOCAP services. I have a full mocap machine ready to go if you are interested in making your own 3d models come to life.

Since this is a commercial project I do have a generous profit sharing plan. Basically all profit goes directly to you till a certain round number is met that we agree upon. Then from there you get 50% of all profit till 2xs your normal pay is reached, and then from there you get 20% till 5xs pay is met and it rounds out about 10% with 5% going into the whole company.

In other words you always get 10% of profit for everything that is done with your models and 10% in general from that series you worked on
For example is if sell the rights to my characters for a movie option for 1 Mil you automatically get 100,000. You also get posted up for 10% of merchandise sales from the series and movies. I can buy you out at 1 million dollars though.

Past that and when I do other properties you get 5% royalties. You never know if the IPs will take off.

Okay here is a go at Desau! i’m trying to create all the characters for episode 1.desau.jpg

Nah I’ve been learning modelling for sometime now. I think there is a point where natural ability finally peaks out.

I would love other alternatives.

Here are a few thoughts

I could go with my semi descent models. I mean to the untrained eye I think a general audience would be cool with it. Not to my specs and quality I’d like but I can stylize and still make it look descent enough and make up with story.

I could use Poser and not stylize my characters. I’d hate to use Poser but I need good looking human models. I’d have to go with a more realistic set of characters than I wanted to but they also take mocap well and for the other non human characters I can cough up a little money for or do some sort of trade off somewhere.

I mean I would like funding but small timers like me don’t get funding. I wasted too much time looking for funding instead of just making something. I wish I could find collabers or at least a few folks who can sketch out the characters and I can retopo the characters myself.

Ideally I wish I had money to get modellers but unfortunately I don’t.

Animation wise I’m pretty descent but I can also utilize the mocap system I have which has turned out great data. I know how to clean up. I have to use MOCAP to speed up production.

Please Help Zbrushers! Stop modelling more Hulks and Wolverines! LOL! J/K

Oh to simply answer questions

hire some 3d artists,
I’d love, love love to! But I’m poor poor poor! I can only pay in small, small amounts. :frowning: I used to pay more until I lost my job :frowning:

can you animate?
I have some ability, yes plus mocap! I am great at cleaning up.

do you have great animators? No, just lil ol me!

is this project funded? No…that would solve all problems.

I very much like your 2D work Really liking

I’m looking forward to seeing how your project turns out. Don’t let money, or the lack of it, get in the way of your dream! I think having an ambitious goal is important, and will ultimately drive you to becoming a better artist.

Thansk I’ll keep working on it. I hope I am able to find better modellers and use the designs

Many of the designs were done by a partner named Manu Martin and some were mine (the crappy ones ) heheheh!

halo3.jpg Here is Haloquin, the first superhero we see in my little movie

Alienboy/Flog: Heroes, Villians and Everything in Between!

to be honest…I can’t believe any of the 2D designs is one of your’s because your sculpts completely lacking of proportions showed by the excellent 2D sketches…

sorry, only my 2 cents

Manu is the artist behind some of the sketches. The crappy sketches are mine.

Unfortunately I was laid off from work and no longer had the money to fund my project. I was finding great artists to work with but when it came time to start working I lost all my funds for the project because I was bootstrapping it. Now I’m stuck with my crappy modelling to make this movie.

I know it’s a sad boohoo story.

Flog,

I’ve seen your posts concerning your short for awhile. I had some questions:

  1. Do you have any animations done yet?
  2. What’s your existing toolset/pipeline?

Not giving you a hard time. I just know you’ve been at this for a few years, and am wondering what the existing toolset you’ve settled on is, and whether you’ve gotten any animation off yet.

Thanks,
lafnjack
