About this piece of work:

I was a kid the first time I saw him. He was a spice dealer at Damascus’ historic spice market, where my mother would take me every week to buy fresh herbs and fragrant spices. He set up shop near the entrance, displaying his colorful items in enormous sacks and baskets. He was continually on the run, negotiating with clients and weighing his wares. But it was his appearance that drew my attention. He had a massive head and a tiny body. He was bald. The skin on his face was wrinkled and aged. His eyes were enormous, and they appeared to pierce everybody who glanced at him. I was enthralled by him and attempted to sneak a glimpse at him anytime we passed by his stall. It was a busy day in the market, and my mother held my hand as we made our way through the crowd. I was glancing around, trying to take in everything, when I noticed him. The spice merchant has a large head and a small body. He gazed at me with a venom I’d never seen before. His eyes were as sharp as daggers, and his mouth was curled in a scowl. My mother yanked me away from him, and we went shopping. I wondered why he was staring at me so intently and what I had done to deserve it. I wondered if he was still alive and if he still sold spices in the market. I wondered if he ever smiled, laughed, or loved.
