Agency's

Hey all,

I’ve decided I’m fed up with my current career (pro intranet developer) and want to get into full time illustration, which is what I wanted to do since toddling and is what I went to college and university to study. Are there any agency members here? Or better yet, actual agencys?

If you’re out there, what sort of work do you want to see and in what format? My strengths are in freehand digital, acrylic, oils, and pencil mediums. Though, of course, I’d expect a portfolio to be required for viewing.

Thanks,

Laz

I have been waiting to see some responds on this one.
I don’t know about your country, I am among the surviving few hare in Kuala Lumpur, almost drop out of the illustration business quite a few times in 15 years but managed to stay on.
Instead of relying on jobs, I chose to produce my own product from now on, could not tell you much until I have break away from dependency.
The transitions between coventional to digital medium have put many artists out of work not to mention corrupted practices.

This is just my story, don’t mean to put you off but I hope some one will have a better idea, afterall we are from different world.
Good luck to you!

Well, I know the illustration industry is a tough one, but my skills translate from paint and brush to digital very well and I have a strong signiture style, so I am hoping to attract some interest.

I was also hoping for more replies on the subject, but as it seems there are few able to provide this type of information, I am have decided to repost in about six months when I have a decent public portfolio. I have already applied to the AOI and they seem happy to get me on board… I guess time is my main obstacle now.

Thanks for your post filip, and for your information. It’s nice to hear from people who are in the boat I will soon be boarding.

Hi Lazarus
Ask your question on the appropriate forum at CGTALK!
Hope this help!
Pilou

I am the banana guy, disregard this answer.
I am the one who can’t make eyes, disregard this answer.
I am a 58 year old newbie,disregard this answer.
Now.
First, get an agent that handles your type of work
Here in the US they have photreps and gallery owners who shill your stuff.
If anyone replies to your thread online here do not trust them if you don’t know them.
Don’t trust them if you do know them.
Some companies will look at the work of several artists, use their ideas to give to the guy who works for them.
Second you are in England,so any of your top drawer work should be shown there not here.
Not being involved I can help in one area.
There are representatives of movie companies
and software companies in this forum, now as we speak. Some of them are the artists themselves, who won’t tell you who they are because they need critical feedback.
They will not get it if you find who they are.If you would like an example look at the
postings of people like Southern, he could put a piece of blank space here and there would be 15 terrifics. 17 awesomes etc.
If you knew that the guy worked for say, the “Nemo” sequel, was posting would you trash his stuff? Yeah! Sure!!
Point is that this is also suspected elsewhere, which is why you are starting to see work posted here that never came near ZBrush.
If your work is of exceptional quality,if you happen to post on the day big brother is watching,if they like your alien as opposed to the next guys alien, if you bring something new to the table( not that thing from Lord of The Rings please, the movie is over),If you have a solid reputation in the trade, if you have paid your dues, if the idea of working 60 to 90 hours a week on a deadline knowing that if you fail they will hire someone better for less.
If,If If,If.
Disregard this answer.

hello lazarus! in a lot of topics, I agree with rtyer… illustration is a simple world, but not a very “kindly”… anyway, I earn my money from it since 20 years, and I am not “steel made”… I can’t speak about movie, although it was my first job, but on advertising and books, and newwspapers, the most huge difference is: you don’t choose what you do!!!( of course you can said no at the assignement) whatr I mean is that it’s always surprising, and you never usually think before at what is asked from you; since xmas, I’ve done 8 pictures of “crash dummies” making love at the rear seat of american cars for an us periodic, cows doing skate and so on for swiss banks, and one family for a shopping center…each problem is different, and each way of handle 3d is different; although zbrush is at the center of the workflow… and ther is never, or nearly never, monsters to do; more often, it’s nice little boys, smiling and so on…ok. but if you go in that direction, ther is not a lot of people, and it’s not very difficult to work; so, it’s an open trail, and effectively an artist representative (agent?) is very useful; especially if he is good… and the last advice I can give to you is the most important(garggle, Im talking like Yoda, HELPS!!!) : seriously: draw, draw, draw… The main 3d soft is :paper and pencil, and it’s cheap!!! friendly.M.

I would bow to Marcel, he is extremely more knowledgeable than I in this area and more capable.
But you do notice the word “agent”
The operative word here obviously is what talent you have and what you do with it.
I would venture to say having seen his work, that Marcel might be the exception rather than the rule.
He is right in another respect also.
Aliens, basically,do not pay the rent.
Despite the overabundance of them on the net.
There appears to be bucks in cows however.

Disregard this also.

Crash Dummies?
Marcel?
Crash Dummies?
Merci
friendly.

rtyer, i have just 2 “cools” pictures of these crash dumies… others would be a problem with aurick… :frowning:

Thank you for the advice, both of you. It is very well received and very kind of you both.

Ok, I guess then my next step is to just sort out a portfolio that I would feel happy with people seeing. The unfortunate thing is that I no longer have my artwork from university - I kind of decided that I was going to change artistic direction and so left it behind and took up digital art. I used to have an extensive pastel and oil on canvas portfolio which was influenced and often commented on by my paint/phylosophy tutor from Goldsmiths College in London. He always said that I could envisage people onto canvas very well, but I always found the topic of the imagery was always quite distracted and so would pull out my hair quite frequently. I now just work with digital mediums - very often just Photoshop and a wacom tablet - and yet still produce work that is seemingly ‘painted’.

Anyway, I haven’t produced much in the last three years as I’ve been busy following the role of programmer, but 2004 is going to be my year I think. I’m going to take the time this year to really work hard on my illustration skills and push to get my work seen by the right eyes. I wanted to be an illustrator since I was about 8 years of age, and I feel I will regret missing my calling if I don’t do something about it.

In two weeks, I finish my part time applications development project, and from then on, you will all see a lot of work subitted by me. If you do… Please be very critical and very harsh - and if you hate it, say so

Thanks,

Laz

Remind me about the harsh and critical part.
Incidentally, for your sake, I tried to give you the bleakest form of an answer.
With a little bit of luck, and extreme perserverence you will do ok.
I sincerely envy you and wish you the very best of luck.
Unfortunately there has to be luck involved.
