Advice Needed on Getting in the industry

Hello, I graduated from the school of visual arts [nyc] in may of 07. I have been having trouble getting into the 3D realm. im currently a “graphic designer” im extremely board of my first job out of the gate. Of course I want to do TV, Video Games and Movies, even if it does mean moving to Cali.

Does anyone have any hardcore advice, im gaining some experience now, but I really should be gaining 3D experience

My Demo Reel, Portfolio[s] and Senior Thesis can be found at:

Please, crit is accepted! anything u can give me!

P.S. I am currently beefing up my reel and going to be removing all the old stuff

I would suggest you to try to check in games compagny, even small one, as trainnee, even if its not paid for one or two month

You will get compagny name on your resume. Maybe the compagny will offer you a first job, or you will make some contacts theres.

One you made a first step, its getting easier to move on…

But the first time are very hard… It sometime takes around 2-3 years to get seetled in game industry…

But its an exciting industry!

Good luck…!

The big suggestion I would make would be to decide where (specifically) in that industry you want to go and then taylor your portfolio to that end. Just a general comment from checking out some of the Zbrush sculpts on your page would be that you will need to work more on your human anatomy. Right now it’s a little weak. Make sure you look at LOTS of reference etc. Good luck!

Edited because I need to work more on my spelling!lol

Thanks man! and yes your right I do need some work on anatomy, infact Ive been trying to work harder on ZB and beef up my reel, trying to get more detailed models.

You guys have any suggestions on what I should make next? Im currently workin on a creature for a friend, kind of a dinsaur lookin dude, I think that will help diversify my reel a bit.

My only recomendations would be to keep researching to see where you feel your particular skills would best fit and work to that end. A lot of companies use “art tests” as part of their hiring process. Some of those tests are available on-line. You don’t actually have to submit anything obviously, but you could take the tests to see where you fit and what your weaknesses are. If you can get on as part of a mod-group somewhere that is helpfull as well. It shows you’re interested in the professin and are putting free time in on it. It also helps show teamwork and at least a rudimentary understanding of a pipeline. Make sure you know how your work fits in within the game environments though. IE…make sure you know low-poly modeling, how your textures will look in one engine vs. another etc.

I’d say make a good human model instead - it’s far easier to do a creature and you can often get away with stuff [unless you choose a strong creature concept and follow that to the t - that’s what the job’s about anyway]. Human anatomy’s hard and if you can do it well, it will sell your skills.
