Advice modelling fantasy architecture please.

I’m really pretty new to Zbrush so this might be a dumb question but I’m trying to do a pretty crazy bit of modelling for a final architecture project and basically wanted to know how to get a Depth pass from a model? I’m wanting to use this image as an alpha back in Zbrush.

I’ll give you a bit of a description of what I’m hoping to do just in case anyone can tell me a better way…

So as part of this final architectural semester-long project we get free reign on whatever we want to do on this large heritage site in my city (Adelaide), my concept being of the old heritage buildings growing wild, developing the architectural language of those ornate old buildings. This is an image of more or less what I’m going to do (it has changed a little bit)- I think most of my final presentation will just be hand drawings but I’m hoping to get a bit of 3D printing going for this one detailed facade.

This is probably a really poor workflow but I’m pretty new to all this. Any advice would be really appreciated. Thanks

I’m not an expert zbrusher, but if you took the building that you want to apply that effect to and extended it (added a few more floors), save it out as a OBJ file, import it into zbrush and the divide it a few times you should be able to just ‘move’ it into the shape of your sketch. You could use the zgrabber brush to get the depth data to create a brush of the windows if you wanted to just stamp them onto a box shap. The clay buildup brush would work to add the ‘tentacles’. Or you could append a zphere and adaptive skin them…

It’s not as tricky as you might think…in theory

It’s primative…and being converted (over 2 hour cue…sheesh) as I type this, but its a quick video of what I was trying to explain…

Wow…just checked, 7 hours later and vimeo still hasn’t converted my silly video. Too bad the free part seems to be suffering…oh well, hopefully it will be up soon and I hope you find it useful.

uguual! Thanks heaps!
That’s great. I didn’t know about the zgrabber brush but do now! That’ll probably be very handy indeed. Never had a video made for me before - very appreciated!

No problem. I forgot to turn on the full window thing when recording that video so you really cannot tell what I was doing. If you have any questions feel free to ask. As I said, I am no expert, but I think the way I was doing it would work perfectly…given more effort.:+1:

Hi Uguual,
just thought I’d finally post the model I’m making of a small section of that drawing I did. About to get it 3D printed for my final exhibition! Only got a few days to finish it. Will post another pic when it’s done… Thanks again for your help with this. People really are good to each other on this forum!
