Adding/Fusing a Cube to a Sphere

Hi, I started a head (sphere) and I want to add a body to the head. Please tell me if this is the correct procedure? Seems kinda difficult though.

Basically I see a lot of people sculpting a whole body from a cube for example but every time I try this the poly’s get stretched and I run out of geometry so how do people do this if they aren’t using ZSpheres or haven’t created a base mesh in a 3D application?

  1. I created a sphere I then pressed (Subtool > Append) and added a cube. Image #1
  2. I then selected the Sphere in the Subtool palette and pressed the (Subtool > Merge Down Button)
  3. I then lowered the resolution ( in Subtools) from 128 to 72. I then selected (Subtool > Remesh All Button) Image #2

Question 1
So let’s say I start a sculpt from a sphere but run out of geometry for the body, is this the best way to add a body or is there a simpler way? Please explain in detail.

Question 2
After I press the “Remesh All” (image#2) can I lower the poly count somehow?

you’re on the right track, but missing a step. Retopo. If you’re sculpting a mesh the most import thing is evenly spaced quads, after that, everything else is just frosting on the cake…as it were.

so after doing a remesh all and projecting the mesh you can just keep sculpting. You can’t lower a remesh any smaller than it is unless you perform another remesh with a lower resolution on that mesh. you can however retopo the mesh so you can get the best polyflow for the sculpt that you’re working on.

hope this helps.

Ok, thanks Soulty. So “Merge Down” and “Merge Visible” do the same thing?
