Adaptive Skin drastically different from Zsphere model

Hi all, I use Zbrush to quickly model 3D printed armatures that I sculpt clay on and cast in bronze. This is a huge timesaver. However, the Zsphere model I am trying to mesh looks terrible. You can see by the attached photo how crazy it looks and that I have tried it with the classic skin as well, but no good. I have changed the settings and no matter what I do it’s basically unusable.

If I load a Zphere model from the projects that came with the software and preview adaptive skin, they look amazing.

What am I missing? Thanks!

Hi @metalforger71

In the Adaptive Skin palette, turn off “Use Classic Skinning”. Move “Dynamesh Resolution” slider to 0 and “Density” slider to 2. Before you click “Preview”, “G Radial” slider should be at 8, “Max Twist” slider at 0 and “Proximity” slider at 0.5. Click “Preview” and see how those settings work for you.

Thank you for the quick reply. I adjusted as suggested and overall it made little difference. I have been experimenting with basic models as well and the adaptive skin changes my models so much it makes the feature useless for me at this point. I have been trying to figure out what I have done wrong, but I’m struggling with it.

There has to be a setting jacked up somewhere

Something is definitely wrong there. It shouldn’t look like that. What version of ZBrush are you using? Can you zip and upload the ZSphere tool so we can have a look at it?

Here is a super simple Zsphere and look how distorted it gets. Yes, I will save and upload this Zsphere. Thanks!

Zsphere.zip (5.9 KB)

I had to install a zip creator. Please let me know if there are issues with it

On that one, you have Dynamesh Resolution set to 16. Setting it to 0 will make a big difference. If I was to guess, I would say that on your first ZSphere tool, which you didn’t want to upload for some reason, it’s just bad zsphere placement. You need the right amount of zspheres and placed properly.

What version of ZBrush are you using?

I made a quick ZSphere tool and this is what I get.

Yes you are correct and at 0 it does look “a little” better. But nothing like yours. I have heard mention of “Zsphere placement”, but none of the demos I have seen saw much about it. And it’s round so I don’t get it. Do you have a link to help? Does every Zsphere in a model have to be placed correctly?

I am running the latest version. 2021.7

Yes, zsphere placement is very important. You can end up with a real mess if not done properly. Watch the video below to get an idea of how it is done. There might be better videos on youtube too.

I appreciate the link. I’m convinced there is something set wrong somewhere. Unless I missed it, he didn’t mention anything about Zsphere placement. And that model he did had nothing different that I could tell that mine didn’t. And his dynamesh was set to 256 and it hardly changed the shape at all.

I have no idea what to do. I guess I can try to open a ticket.

Thanks again for your help

Yes, his Dynamesh Resolution was at 256 but, he also had to ZRemesh it. There is a reason for leaving it at 0. Afterall, you can always subdivide it later. Like I said, there is probably better videos on Youtube.
