5 pointed 3D star Help

i am trying to make a 3D Star
i like how the default poly star looks, i just need 5 points.
Thanks!

i used a 3d-sphere
initialize-setings:
-z-size=50
-HDivide=10
-VDivide=3
-turn off sh &sv (smoothing)
then edit-mode
-symmetry z=on
-radial on
-radial-count=5
then move 5 points

tada…

Here’s an idea…

Choose the cylinder tool

Under TOOL:MODIFIERS:INITIALIZE, Set horizontal divisions to be 10 and vertical to be 5. this gives you vertex points in the right place to begin vertex modeling.

Draw the tool on the canvas, enter editing mode, move the points on the ends of the cylinder to the center when looking end-on. then move every other “edge” of the cylinder in to make the points.

I doubt you will get a very exact looking star as there are no snap commands in ZB.

I thought about using the sweep 3D tool, but it won’t let me create less than 4 vertical divisions so you end up with a “fat” profile of the star points.

I’m sure a more experienced modeler may have a better way, but this is one area where ZB seems a little hard to use, that of creating some types of precise geometric models.

Here’s a star that I whipped up in Wings 3D and converted to a ZTL file for you.

Depending on what you want to use it for, you may need to divide it some.

Keep object smoothing off as well for the sharp edges.

Good luck!

Hi Sadicus,

I made this star tool over a year ago so I don’t remember exactly what I did.

I’m pretty sure that I started with the 3D cylinder and set the H and V divisions in the initialize section of the tool modifiers to match the number of lines that make up a star - 10 by 2 I think. Then modeled with radial symmetry. Here are a couple of star.ztls I’m going to attempt to upload if you want to play with them. Star tools.zip

I think a script would help explain this better. I’ll try to put one up later

Or you could do what stoNe says… Apparently he was posting while I was!

I think there is more easy
I come back in a few minutes
So after reflexion
One way a little more esay than monkey but similar
Take the Cone 3D for a Star Background Flat !
Initialize Smooth H Off Smooth V Off
Horizontal 10 Vertical 3
Z H=10
Draw the Object In View Top
Mode Edit Selection Z Mirror Radial 5
That’s all

More funny and speedy
Take the Star Alpha
Make 3D
That’s all
Pilou Red Star

Boy you guys are fast

This is now officially the geometry challenge thread.

Next up - the icosatetrahedron :stuck_out_tongue:

Am I allowed to use Wings?

Only with one arm (or wing) tied behind your back.

Here is another star with 6 hdivide and radialsymmetrycount=3
the torus hdivide=4
looks like a mercedes-star

I know that this isn’t quite what you’re looking for (stoNe seems to have given the best answer already), but here are some more fun star-like shapes that can be whipped up using the Initialize settings for the Gear3D.

These were all great! thank you!
