4R8 Drawing straight lines.

Hello!
The new way of drawing straight lines while holding shift makes certain types of workflows impossible.

Previously, drawing a line while holding down shift let you see in real time what type of mark the brush was creating, and allowed you to push in or pull out by tapping alt while drawing that line. You could also vary your pen pressure to change how thick/deep the mark was. This type of markmaking is a critical part of our detailing stage on high poly. The new version shows the guideline instead of the mark, is difficult to predict where the endpoint is, and doesn’t allow for pulling in and pushing out on the same line. It also means there is no way to vary the thickness/depth of the mark with pen pressure.

Is there a way to get back the way it was on 4r7?

Thank you
See you

Lucas

Theres always Lazy mouse. Switch on Lazy Mouse (stroke> Lazy Mouse) , backtrack, and line. Turn the track curvature up to 100.

This will give you a straight line stroke between any two points, with a lot of interactive visual feedback.

Hello Scott!
Thanks a lot for your answer
I tried it and it is working.
The problem now is that when I dont want a straight line it still give me that line and circles, and it is pretty annoying.
How can I get rid off this line with circles?

Thanks again

You can toggle Lazy mouse on and off with the L key.

Hello!
And the fact I have to go a direction and then the other one is pretty disturbing.
Any ideas on that?

Thanks!

I need lazy mouse for when I dont do straight lines too.

Think of Backtrack like using a ruler, and building up a straight line by stroking back and forth along the edge.

To quickly enable/disable only the Backtrack functionality of Lazy Mouse, you could move the backtrack button to the UI and/or make a hotkey assignment for it. With Backtrack off, lazy mouse will perform as normal.

That would be a good idea.
I just can’t figure out a way for it to be as simple and practical as the other version.
Thanks a lot for your help Scott, I really appreciate it!
Have a great day

I’m sympathetic to your situation. I was just trying to get you up and running with something that gets the job done until such a time as Pixologic perhaps revisits the feature.

In my opinion though, once you’re set up to invoke it quickly with the push of a button and accustomed to using it, this method provides far better fine control, and no awkward screen plane rotation to get the exact angle you need. Just define any two points and stroke between them.

In addition, this opens up the use of some of lazy mouse 2.0’s cool new features like Stroke Continuation:

Yeah, there is so many workflows, and peoples,… that use this software, that when they change something, it will be the best for some, and pretty bad for others.
I’ll get used to it at one point!
Thanks again for the help!

Hey Lucas…i’m having this issue too…as well, now i’m finding alot of my custom brushes do not work with the snap/draw…so i have to remake them using a brush that i find works…compared all settings in stroke, brush, alpha but cannot figure out why they would not work like before…

As a work around…you can use LazyNezumi and assign a hotkey for on/off on that…not ideal but better than nothing for now…

hello Jeff!
That could be an other option too!
Thanks for the idea.

Cheers
