4R7 - delay and lag when sculpting 32 and 64 bit version

I am a bit perplexed. I have been getting serious lag and delays when trying to sculpt in both the 32 and 64 bit version. While sculpting any action that requires a line to be drawn out such as a selection, clip or slice, mask or transpose causes the program to freeze for a few seconds. I have to go at it four or five times to finally get the action I want without it messing up. Usually if I let go the shift key (in the case of those selection methods that requires it’s use) it will unfreeze for a bit then refreeze again, rinse repeat again and again. I am also getting something similar with my regular brushes. When first opened the tool can be sculpted on just fine with no apparent slow down. But after a short period it starts to get laggy. What was a smooth sculpting flow starts to become a stuttering start and stop lag session. I can watch the brush as it skips and stutters across the model very slowly. The model in question during this session was 721k polys. All the subtools combined are only 5.5 million polys. I don’t have any odd things turned on like floor or perspective and dynamic subdivide is definitely off. As a test I exported the model as an obj and opened it up in 4r6 and it isn’t exhibiting any lag or stuttering. I don’t know what is causing this.

as a further test. close and reopen zbrush, open the ztool and try to do the same steps immediately. if there is no lag then, it could be these memory leaks people are talking about, re: the thread about ram getting eaten after awhile.

Check if it’s not caused by Undo History.
You can find more info here for some solutions to it

Nah it’s not undo history. I just started up ZB4r7 64 bit and within just a few seconds it went completely laggy. I haven’t been saving the project file with undo history. It was working fine earlier today but not now even after a reboot of computer and ZB. I even tried closing out and opening up 32 bit…same problem there. One odditity I noticed is that it didn’t start happening until right after I resized the brush and no… the dynamic setting for brush size was never changed. I can’t sculpt like this.

So a little further experimenting. If I export the tool as an OBJ and import it the problem seems to go away. I also seem to be able to create new tools and it doesn’t affect them. So it seems to now be some error embedded with either the tool or project file. Problem is I can’t work like this if I have to export all the subtools everytime this happens and it happens quite frequently.

Regarding the lagginess when doing certain actions the Shift key seems to be the culprit. Any action requiring me to hold SHIFT while doing it (selection, masking, transpose, etc) causes the program to freeze until I let go of the Shfit key then a few seconds later it will continue. Hold shift and try to do the action again and yep…freezes. Sometimes it freezes right away sometimes it’s a few seconds into the action. When I am tyring to mask or use transpose it is particular annoying as i have to go at it several times before i can get it right (masking misses the area i masked and transpose move the tool the wrong way because it freezes)
