I just recieved this in the mail and thought I would share my impressions of it. The first volume in a series, Volume 1 covers the how to’s of creating realistic creature textures in Photoshop. It focuses on making the bump map, colored textured map and even the specularity and diffuse maps. It covers everything from the ground up including how to make realistic eyes. It is a great resource for the beginner and can be a valuable asset even to the experienced 3D artist. I found a few tips and techniques in it that have proven to be very valuable. There is an enclosed CD which contains all of the JPG and PSD files used to create the textures AND it also has the Fairy and Gremlin Daz3D Poser figures included for FREE (a $45 value)! There are also several demos of 3D programs included. The book is written by the master himself- Bill Fleming. It is a large format book with large pictures and easy to read text. The book focuses on texturing Bill’s Freaky Frank character but the techniques can be applied to any project. This would be a great resource to have at hand if you are looking to get into 3D texturing or if you would just like to see how the pros do it. It can be bought at www.daz3d.com You should do yourself a favor and check out Bill Fleming’s web site at www.komodostudio.com You can see some of his work there.
As he states in his book the original Freaky Frank texture was created in Deep Paint 3D but in THIS book it is ALL done in Photoshop so that it can reach and be more readily available to a larger number of people. The technique could be reproduced in PaintShop Pro and Corel Photopaint too with some slight modifications.
yeah freaky frank was made in deep paint 3D thats this http://www.righthemisphere.com/products/dp3d/index.htm
try deep paint 3D with texture weapond demo.
it way better then photo shop when playing with texture i think.
if Photoshop shop trying to reproduce it then that tells me right there i would go with the arignal maker
DeeP PainT 3D but of course there price is whacko
His technique is still very very strong even in Photoshop. I tried it and it produced some very cool results. He shows a lot of tips for creating what he calls “skin chaos”- a very good way to create realistic skin. When I incorporate this technique in my upcoming projects I will post a note to the effect when I post the picture.
As I’ve already ordered it, I’m glad to hear it’s good. I have another book (“Digital Botany And Creepy Insects”) by this author so I was quite sure it would be interesting. Now I hope it won’t take forever in the mail to reach Switzerland
I’ve been planning to buy the book this coming weekend. Now that you’ve raved about it, I’m even more excited about ordering.
I knew that the original Freaky Frank was done with DP3D:TW, and was afraid that it was going to focus on that program. It’s great to know that he’s taken it to Photoshop for the book, instead.
As you said, the principles would still apply in DP, but I bet they will be just as useful when combined with ZBrush and TextureMaster. My own experience is that TM is much easier to work with and in many ways even more powerful than the much more expensive Deep Paint.
i have his site bookmarked since southern has posted it as one of his favorite link and keep checking it out for updates every few weeks. what a master! not being into texturing myself i wont order it but i cant wait to see what you come up with and how to make use of his obviously priceless techniques with Z, Mentat!
