3D Cover - Batman: The Killing Joke

Hello everyone

This has been on my hard disk for some time so after buying a new computer and playing with Batman Arkham Asylum I got new energy decided to put an to end it.

I made this image because I loved the comic. I got hooked with the cover in the first second I put my eyes on it.
I have not tried to carbon-copy the original art but give it another approach on the artistic style.
Also, i have to say that this has been terrible stressing to me because of how much i like the original art. I hope I have not screwed it for the people who likes this comic cover. :)

It all was modeled as base meshes in 3DSMax and then sculped in Zbrush.
Then I exported each subtool to 3dsmax and placed all the lights and materials.
Finally, i rendered it with mental ray and composed several passes in Photoshop.

       Hope you like it :)

Great cover recreation. Good job. Looks just like it but with a 3D twist.

Batman Arkham Asylum was a blast to play wasn’t it? :stuck_out_tongue:

Great job on achieving an “inky” look. If you like that style you should check out finalToon.

Kudos. :+1:

And here there are some variations i did just for fun and a right out of zbrush render.

Awesome! I loved that comic also and it does have one of those covers that always seems to jump out and call you. I think this came out very cool and I am glad that you decided to finish and share it with us. :+1:

Beautiful work man!!!

wow! you totally nailed it, great job, i love the small details you added and how they work with the toon shading. would you care to share your settings for the inktoon look?

Well done! I love the way you did the hair and the renders look great. I especially like the comic style one.

On the first colored image the left forearm looks like it’s not suddivided? It’s rounded in the other renders. was there a reason you left it that way?

Very cool, and immediatley recognizable I was just looking at the original artwork the other day also on a bit of Arkham Asylum withdrawal.

One small suggestion I have is to make the teeth a little less prefect, and uniform.

Oh wow definatly wouldnt think its 3d at first sight so i guess its mission
accomplished i guess.
Great job!

The 4th row of render passes how did you do those?
I love them!

Thanks so much for your comments

Well, that was meant to be that way. Good choice? bad chooice? Only Odin knows :stuck_out_tongue:

The toon effect of the extra images is achieved entirely in photoshop. I have spent a good amount of time trying to get a nice ink style without any after work so maybe i will do a tutorial about it. Anyway, those images were not meant to be “main images” if you know what i mean. They could have a bit more or work.

Awesome Job…looks GREAT! :+1:

This is one of my all time favorite comic covers. You did it justice! Bravo…

Dickie
