23" monitor or 32" led TV for ZBrushing?

Hi all!

I’m looking to upgrade from my laptop’s 14" monitor to something larger, but I’m having trouble deciding on a 32" led HDTV or a 23" monitor. The price difference is only about 50 USD or so. I was just thinking that 32" is a lot of real estate for 3d modeling and desktop usage, not to mention the ability to use it as a TV for gaming and movies.

Both have HDMI connections, and the LED HDTV has a 100 Hz refresh rate.

Here are the general specs of each:

Acer G237HL 23" Monitor

  • 6 ms response time
  • 1920 x 1080 max resolution
  • contrast ratio 100,000,000:1
  • HDMI and VGA input

Philips32PHA4609S/98LED HDTV

  • 100 Hz
  • 32"
  • 1366 x 768p panel resolution
  • HDMI and VGA input
  • USB input

I’ve heard that TV’s will not display the same resolution as a proper monitor, but that was apparently true only for VGA connections. With HDMI, the quality for a TV connection is said to be on par with a monitor.

With that said, all that info was from posts in home theater and PC forums that are more concerned with gaming and internet browsing. Since I’m getting this new monitor or TV specifically for ZBrushing, ZBC is probably the single best place to get some good advice.

Any advice is much appreciated!

I went from a 19" monitor to a 32" SONY BRAVIA TV I wasn’t using and had totally forgotten about. I think the quality is fine, maybe other people might see a problem but I don’t really notice anything. The size is a huge plus.

EDIT: I see that your TV is not 1080p or higher. I think it won’t look too good.

Thanks for replying, Znub!

Sorry for neglecting to add this part of the specs; the TV actually IS 1080p (copied from the Philips site):

  • Supported Display Resolution
  • Computer inputs up to 1920x1080 @ 60Hz
  • Video inputs-
  • 24, 25, 30, 50, 60 Hz
  • up to 1920x1080p

Seeing as I’m going to connect it via HDMI, I THINK that should mean that I’m getting the same kind of resolution as the monitor.

EDIT: PS, my laptop’s screen max screen resolution only goes up as high as 1366 x 768. Would it still be able to take advantage of the monitor’s higher 1920 x 1080 resolution?

The other thing I’m worried about is lag time.

RE-EDIT: You’re right; I misread the specs. It’s only 1366 x 768p. Full 1080p resolution is only for 40" and above.

So I guess that just leaves me with the 23" monitor or a larger 40" TV.
