2.5d Painting - Eyrie

I made myself many promises for this year, one which I’m determined to keep is to spend more time in ZBrush. I thought I’d start right at the beginning, doodling with pixols and I find ZB is both astonishingly responsive and addictive for painting. The original image is over 5000px wide - other natural media apps would struggle with large fast strokes at this size but ZB barely hicced. Most of the image was made with the PaintBrush and smudge tools set up with alphas to get impasto like effects, but some things, like the background mountains and foreground rocks started out as spherebrush, 3d spheres or cubes dragged on then smudged into shape. No refs used (obviously!) aside from the golden eagle’s head because I wanted to get the profile right. I hope you like it! Please do crit, always trying to improve. :slight_smile:

Very nice! Sometimes its hard to remember that this sort of thing is not only possible in ZB, but is actually what it was intended to do :slight_smile:

So nice to see this presented, and you have done a beautiful job. It’s not often that we see someone using ZBrush’s 2.5d painting capabilities. Love the little field mouse jumping out of the way.

hey its nice to see some work that is rarely seen on this forum… i really love the painterly illustrated feel in this piece. its nice to see that people still haven’t forgotten the original roots of the early days of zbrush where it first started…

Thanks for the great comments, much appreciated! Obviously the hi res sculpting will take centre stage but I agree, I’m surprised more people aren’t using ZB for painting.
There will definitely be more. Actually this image reminded me of a recent trip up Aonach Mor and also reminded me I wanted to do a series called Accidental Tourist, where people (well mostly the back of my wife!) have got caught in my photos in some great environments.
Here’s a wip of Accidental Tourist No1 with Ben Nevis in the background.
The stone circle is actually a cluster of glacial erratics, the place is littered with them, which must mean this was once the bottom point of a glacier - incredible considering how high we were. Also Interesting to see the difference between using refs and not. I like and dislike things about both of them.

Tis as finished as it needs to be really. Might go back at some point and play with rock detailing etc, but I quite like the way the grass turned out, it sort of reminds me of The Glasgow Boys’ use of the square brush technique, though obviously not quite as competent! :slight_smile:

Beautiful paintings. It’s crazy to realise how versatile zbrush is.

I also think this thread should go Top Row, simply because it wins the prize for Best Use of Painting Tools in Zbrush.

Hey these are beautiful paintings, and the brush strokes are nice. I was wondering if you could give me a good reference of how to paint in ZBrush I’ve been only doing 3d head models but I’ve also wanted to create concept art. Thanks.

Definitely a top class painting, I thought it was a photo from the thumbnail. Even when enlarged, the girl looks so real. Great work.

Fenrir there’s not a great deal to say. Fill a layer with a base colour then start painting. :slight_smile: I attached my basic brush for download HERE but its nothing special. I also included the material I used which is a basic mat with ambient set to 50 and specular down to 1. I also added a tiny bit of noise. Stroke>Spacing set to about 0.02 gives a solid line and upwards for a more broken line. Z intensity was set quite low so the impasto effect gets built up with successive strokes and likewise RGB intensity was set to around 45. This setup seemed quite good for a nice textured underpainting feel. Whenever the z depth got too much I hit ‘Bake’ in the layer channel to get rid of depth information, used the smudge tool with included alpha to blend particularly large impasto strokes back into the canvas, then carried on. Having said there’s not much to say I seem to have said too much. :slight_smile:
