YOUR definition of arts

Art comes in whatever form or media we humans or the universe decides to manifest itself such as painting, sculpture, music or even natural phenomena like nebulae, or lightning storms of certain varieties, or sunsets.

To me, art is whatever evokes some form of strong emotion or idea from some stimuli which is most likely, but not limited to, a purposefully created work. Everyone has their own criteria as to what is appealing to themselves, but most above-average art has properties which are measurable to a degree. Those properties we equate with the principals of design.

The idea can sometimes simply be “Look at this pretty picture”. I think whatever you want art to be, it is so. Art is PURELY subjective so to compare one’s definition of art with another’s may be interesting, but beside the point. Art isn’t a shared experience. It’s a personal experience. Sure, there may be someone with you watching a movie or concert or maybe a gallery, but their experience and interpretation could be entirely different than yours.

I agree with you but you cant generalize that art isnt a shared experience.
For many art is solely a shared experience.
It just makes me think of my mother going to an exibition with her gang of
girls.
They wouldnt even spend a single thought on art normally but once they
have this group experience they all become art lovers and critics ^^
Most of the works they see they consider art simply because theyr in an
museum. So for them art isnt a personal feeling but more what society
shows them as art.

For me personally art just happens.
I could rush thru the louvre on rollerskates yelling yes and no in a split second
because to me its so obvious what i like.
On the other hand i guess ill never see the louvre because art is to me
nothing that makes me want to stand in a line for hours  .

What I mean by art not being a shared experience is not that you can’t go view something with friends or relatives and engage in discussion or whatever, but that whoever you are with can’t possibly know with any certainty what you really got from an experience unless you told them or if they observed some type of change in facial expression from you.

But then, the sharing didn’t come from the art experience, it came from the verbal or visual sharing of your thoughts to another. I can tell if a piece of art effects someone to where they are sad from visual cues, but I can only speculate to how deeply they are affected. We can’t share our emotions except verbally or visually, but one cannot actually feel the exact emotions that another experiences from a work of art. That’s why it’s a personal experience. One can then share that experience with others verbally or though facial expressions. That’s all I was trying to say.

Art is what is inside of you waiting to come out…, an expression of what you feel…, an expression of what you feel to make others feel what YOU felt when you created the piece…, IF you can achieve this then you have arrived at Master status…, to a Master a piece CAN be completed!!!

art is the interpretation of reality expressed in a medium.

that one sentence contains volumes of implications but that should do it… in the most general terms possible.

this means that “friday the 13th part 21, jason’s bastard son” is indeed art. not great art but art nonetheless.

and the more you exploit the particularities of a given medium for expressive effect, the better the work of art is.

so a movie that is basically a filmed stage play is a bad movie. or a movie that tries to portray the internal thoughts of a character through endless narration is a failed movie. or a stage play that tries to portray car chases is a bad stage play.

I agree with Kraken on this one.

When I went to see a stage drama with my family, we were watching the same thing and talked about it.
Then it became obvious that although we watched the same thing,
what we received differ greatly.

My sister couldnt decipher the underlying messages, because she wasnt trained in doing so. And thus the experience that we received differ a great deal by how much of the arts that we understood itself.
Likewise, my mother could see through the political aspects of the play, while I couldn`t, because she has more experience in the field than I am.

in my experience the term “art”, with regret, has become more a social barometer of sorts rather than a mark or symbol or experience.

Personally I think of the concept of ‘art’ as more being a verb, instead of a noun.

too many contemporary artists first name “Grant” second name “Junket” rent seeking with lefty parodies of how everyone should behave.
Either taking credit for other peoples work, or just preoccupied trying to out smart each other…blah blah blah
(my quick anti-pomo rant)

Do you think there are any digital masters? I mean the work on Benjamin Button is historical but, do you think it will stand up to or with Michelangelos’ work?

is digital too young to have true masters?
Or is it because technology keeps changing, there’s no time to master something, so to speak, and we rely on the traditional skills albeit in a digital format?

“you think that’s air your breathing…hymmph”
