Windows Security Patch

Does it hurt?
Heartfelt congratulations on completing my thread.
“Everyday, in everway, I am getting better and better”.
Trust I don’t owe two minutes.

Edit: apologies to Svengali, all this has nothing to do
with a heads up on what he believes to be a helpful
patch.
Many thanks, in any case.

hi spaceboy

have looked they aren’t hidden and have been to busy to break out the data recovery stuff but might break it out if I can’t find the dvd’d and cd’s I have all my stuff saved to.

not all patches are a good thing. Bicc is right in that 99% of the time they create more problems than they fix. I usually pick and choose what am gonna install depending on what it is supposed to fix. this time was to lazy to read the papers…my fault…won’t happen again.

was probably a sign for me to clean up this beast anyway…been too busy fixing everyone else’s and not spending enuf time on mine. new year new priorities are in order i think.

Fear sells, whether its fear of viruses or fear of terrorists.

Simple caution is probably almost as effective as the most costly antivirus software. I gave up on the big name subscription-type packages after paying for several years during which they never detected any viruses but overwhelmed me with scary emails and popups for new add-ons that would certainly save me from other threats or annoyances.

When I stopped paying tribute, I of course expected the updates would stop coming… what I didn’t expect was the antivirus software would simply stop working. For me, the antivirus industry had morphed into a protection racket. I also found it frustrating that I could not even find a way to talk to a real support person (at McAfee) when that happened. Enough already.

At that point I found AVG, installed it and have never had any problems.

(Pixolsoul, any details on the problems you’ve had with AVG would much be appreciated.)

I suppose it all comes down to whatever works for you. It’s also probably a good idea to avoid certain catagories of links and downloads from unknown sources or file-swapping with suspect individuals.

As for Windows, I’ve always felt about Microsoft the way Marcus describes it.
For me most of the patches and releases “fixed” things I don’t ever use. However, as I said, security patches I take seriously enough to read about, then install, if it seems a good idea.

Operating system discussions are a bit like opinion on religion or politics. I always hesitate before even opening my mouth but this seemed to be a worthwhile heads up. Sorry.

Sven

Mr. Svengali
Trying to help others with information that is valuable
to them is never anything to be sorry for.
You do the best you can, try to help ,and keep
your fingers crossed.
Repeating, thanks.

Aminuts, not being insulting but have you tried the usual
home remedies
1 Restore a few times ( hopefully xp version)
2. Also wildcard searches for the missing files ( maybe filed elsewhere)
Again not being insulting.
Wildcard search=go to search and type for instance *.bmp ( that is shift 8 period file ext>)
That will pull up all the bmps on your machine, hopefully in the search
you might see one of the ones you are missing.
Fingers crossed.
As I mentioned a few patches notably sp1 and sp2 go into the computer
kind of permanently.
If nothing else, coulda been a lot worse.

EDIT: Shot in the dark.
Customers in the U.S. and Canada can receive technical support from Microsoft Product Support Services at 1-866-PCSAFETY. There is no charge for support calls that are associated with security updates.

Warning: Lemo’s PC rant of the week!

Haha (mad laughter)!
Now it got me. I have a cable modem and am happy with it. Very Fast and reliable. Now… I received a flyer to inform me which cool ‘free’ extras are included in the service. An Internet Radio Plugin, a free version of McAfee Anti Virus, and some other ‘Junk’. I installed the Radio Software just to learn that the stations are playing terrible stuff and to get the usefull programing I ought to sign up for 12$ or so per month. I thought ‘My A**’ and deinstalled the Radio stuff again. Now I downloaded McAfee. Virus Software is something usefull. Right?! HAHA. After the installation my System was not working right. I de-installed it. But it refused to vanish completetly. Once in a while a window pops up and tries to check for updates. Till today I fail to find the program in charge. No clue where the heck it smuggled itself into my system. All directories are deleted… No idea where that stealth software has dug itself in.

On my other PC, my old PC, the system now boots (I installed both parallel (I’m such an idiot sometimes hahaha)) and then clears the screen and dies. I can start in Protected mode but McAffee has ruined otherwise.

I can only share the opinion of the others who say: Forget the adware and spyware stuff and the anti virus stuff, use firefox to prevent the worst and then maybe have an old PC you use to surf and to be as infested with whatever the web has to offer.

Recently I also read that a few scumbags have sued anti spyware and ad-ware companies which lead to the result that ceratin ad and spyware is now NOT being reported and or removed. The reason was that it violates your personal right to enjoy the results and services of the adware and spyware programs hahaha. You also might have the legal obligation to run some of those programs in the background because you are using a program which you received for free and which is financing itself whith pigibacking exploiting software. I guess people do not read the 50 page license agreement of every piece of software they get their hands on.

I’d like to have a few minutes with those judges who let the scam artists run society in my basement… Pillow fight of course… hehehe

Hope you enjoyed my Friday evening rant!

Lemo

hi bicc…yes did all the usuals and even all the unusuals, even went thru my entire registry.

it’s what I get for not practicing what I preach! hahaha dohhhhh

lemo…you call that a rant? sheesh forget the pillow fight…i say rocket launch a few gavels at em…those old farts running things don’t have a clue about computers and what and whom are doing what to average joe user. I find it even more hilarious that our government is going to fork over a few million bucks to “secure up” open source software…what a joke. Read that as another big brother move to control what folks do with their computers…they can’t secure our country but they are gonna secure open source? hahahahahahahahahahahaha

aminuts - Really odd problem you’ve had. I have three computers, of different manufacture, all set to fully update automatically via an always on Broadband connection. That patch was already installed when I checked. No problems anything like you had.

bicc39 - I run SP2 on all 3 with no problems in many months now. Used to have lots of problems though. I then found a good step by step on OS installation in a magazine and followed it and problems went away. It took time but worked for me. Basic steps included -Download SP2 and all current critical updates from Microsoft and burn to a DVD - Install XP Pro from original disc - install updates before adding any software or connecting to the internet - Go to update site and do any further updates - Add peripherals (make sure you have all the latest drivers and software upgrades in advance) - then software and software updates. Every issue I’ve had since has tracked back to other software and not the OS. Oh - and be VERY CAREFULL ABOUT ANY FREE STUFF FROM THE WEB!!! LOTS OF PROBLEMS WITH THE FREE STUFF!!

lemonnado - I’ve used McAfee’s online service for 3 years on all systems - no problems and no virus attacks it did not catch.

Another thing that helped a lot - I installed all matched pairs of RAM fully tested before and after installation and found lots of my problems were due to RAM even though the problems were not apparent. Another result was that on this, my newest machine the RAM never fragments. I also ran test and found problems on my hard drives I did not know were there.

Blaine: I was standing on a corner with about 10 people, not so long
ago waiting for the crosswalk light to change. Bird decided to clean itself
out, I got it. Rest were never touched:cry:

Have no doubt that you have had no problems, am truly envious.
Also believe,as you say that most problems after installation are probably linked to some software or even graphic card problems.
But if your problems are related to a printer, certain graphics card, etc what happens. The patch has been installed, you cannot uninstall the patch.
In sp1 case, you cannot even format it out of the computer.
Suppose your graphics card driver has no update.
Buy a new one, because of a patch!

Two computers that I use the most are a Dell and a Compaq.
Both, within two days of installing sp1 exhibited problems with the monitor
display.
Calls to Dell, Compaq, Microsoft resulted in what I told you above.
Microsoft told me that the original installation resulted in thousands of problems.
Calls to Dell and Compaq, resulted in no satisfaction other than being referred
to Microsoft.
Problems in both are still here and manifests itself every two weeks or so.
Can fix it now in a matter of minutes, it is like an old friend.
Point of all this is the following.
Have no doubt you are problem free.
Some have software and/or hardware that is bothered.

Suppose you are one of the “some”.
The basic purpose of these updates are security issues.
So the decision is do you think the security problem is worth the possible
conflict issues?
Because of the way I use my computers, and the type of information stored on them, I would have hesitated to install the updates.
Had I known the possiblity of conflicts was there
At the time of my installing the sp1 patch ( it was during the first few
days of its debut) there was absolutely no mention made of potential conflicts with anything.
I truly hope you continue to be problem free.
I will also continue to avoid patches and updates from Microsoft.
If a hacker wants to see my love letters or orc head he is welcome.
Maybe he can fix the patch problems.
Microsoft can’t.

[RANT]
I’m sure that while 90% of microsft user dont have any bother at all with their OS some of us here in that ‘unlucky’ 10%. Of course the reason the other 90% usually don’t have problems is because they basically only use their PC’s for bloody emails and chatrooms! I’m convinced that I am the unluckiest guy alive. I’ve never had any install of XP thats not needed another complete format and install within a month. It’s gotten to the stage now where I actualy plan of them…mad eh?

The amount of times I’ve been caught by virus sent by persons unknown spoofing their email addy, drive killer wrecking my drives and god alone knows how many surges that for some reason pass straight through any surge protector I ever buy, has probably sent me quite mad. At the moment here’s the last 7 days of problems on my system just for a laugh.:

1- Virus infestation due to my site being hacked and quarter of the hosting companys servers being infected. Moment I logged onto my FTP…virus city!

2- Zbrush decides to go on holiday every time I texture a model. Obviously it feels overworked and needs a break. Sorted by yet another damn install.

3- Maya goes mental on me (and I’m not talking mental ray here lol). It now 'allows ’ me the luxury of one render before needing a reboot of my system. To top this off if you even try to paint a blendshape you better be prepared to wait 7 minutes to see your results on screen! Problem remains unsolved even after reinstall.

4 - Microsoft installs a nice little patch in my system that renders 3 programs that I use useless and unable to run. I wouldn’t mind so much but it was told not to by pressing the whole ‘no I dont bloody want to install this patch’. it’s nice to know microsoft listens to us all eh?

I could rythm off loads more over the last couple of weeks but I think you get the general idea. Am I the only one thats sick of antivirus and spyware that uses so much god damn memory and resources up that it seems at times like my PC is running in slow motion like some old rerun of the six million dollar man? Virus software that seems to ignore certain viruses that are later found by software from another company? Firewalls with more holes than a seive…

If Zbrush and photoshop would run on linux I’d have it reinstalled in a a heartbeat. Yeah its not without its own problems but it does at least cut it down to a dull roar.

Windows Vista…dont get me started on that one! How can ANY company producing an OS justify the resources it needs? For gods sakes this is an OS not a PS2 game! I don’t care if it has nice pretty blue transparent windows or such like. Does it run using the minimum resrouces possible…does it mean I don’t have to upgrade my current system? If the answer to these were yes I’d think about it. But as it stands they can stick vista where the sun doesn’t shine. Overbloated and probably just as bug ridden as every other MS operating system.

Yep! Vista is the first OS I will NOT, and under NO circumstance adopt. It’s a MS Business Platform and not made for my benefit.

One can say what he want’s but my Apple Laptop has served me the best in my professional life compared to the PC Laptops. It starts with printing, USB or Firewire under Windows simply is not reliable (removable HAHAHA my <beep>). Burning CD"s or DVD’s on a LAptop hahaha. Mad laughter and a pile of shredded media is all I can recall. The MAC had countless updates. NOT a SINGLE one has messed up anything. I have a ‘Web’ Account on my Mac and KNOW that NOTHING can install a trojan horse or a virus on another account. And NO account can modify the OS without me accepting any request with the Admin Password. THAT is how it should be but it prevents the scam artists to sneak some apps under your hood for which they have paid MS to provide for the loophole.

Under OSX and under Linux I can SEE EVERY process, every driver, actually every single piece of memory or harddisk with utilities made for the purpose. Try to find your way around in this root kit infested piece of art from MS. Simply terrible.

Unfortunately the majority of people are ‘consumers’. They accept the shortfalls of their system as they are not educated and actually, do not care about the details. They happily pay the ‘Geek Squad’ to repair their printing problem for a couple hundred bucks and feel bad that THEY caused the problem. If MS-OS would be a car or better an airplane, the Company would alreday have been shut down by the FAA and the NTSB. But the damage done in productivity and loss of profits by MS seems to be widely accepted. Unfortunately you actually sign essential rights away once you accept the end user license. In ‘real life’ many passages would not hold up as you cannot waive everything. If I would build and sell a wood chipper without ANY safety guards and actually measures to DRAG people opertating it into the machine, I would be jailed in no time. If people produce defect software which causes harm… well just include a passage in some license agreement which holds you harmless.

Any case, heaven is an OS where YOU, as the user are the Boss and the appllications you install are not irrevocably integrated into the OS thus leading to greater and greater instability…

I wrote it before, and I wrote it again…

I WOULD GLADLY PAY IN FULL - YES IN FULL - FOR A SECOND ZBRUSH VERSION RUNNING ON LINUX !!! (because my XSI does not run on OSX hahaha).

MAYBE the god’s have mercy and Linux will be ported to the new Apple Boxes. I don’t mind dual booting just to get rid of that Gates Monkey on my back.

Many thanks, had a lonely feeling for awhile.:grimacing:

Aminuts!

Just one more idea, maybee it helps…if your files are deleted R-Studio NTFS could restore them. It was the only tool was able to restore my files (about 40gig) on a defected harddrive. Unfortunately it won’t help if your files are wiped. As I know you can try the tool and if it seems to be a solution then enough to pay for.

Regarding Windows updates I suggest to install them with a little delay since they were publishing by MS.

I have a story…

once on an early morning I realized a few fresh security updates on windows update site and installed them. After rebooting my PC did some post installing procedure and then rebooted again. Before the logon process did it again and again so my system has not stood up.
I was thinking about how to rollback to a safely working state of system because it has installed about 8 setup packages. I wanted to know which package was the destructor so I begun to install them on another (not english based) windows. Soon I felt same problem. :+1:
I told my friends of course what they must not update and soon I found same version of package with different size of file. ( Is it correct enough? )

Rix…i have a restorer or two but will look into that one…thanks!

Lemmo…now that’s a RANT!!

I could go for days and days on MS and all the others. Somewhere along the way I decided that the energy I spend hating, spitting vile their way, blood pressure surges was energies I’d rather spend more productively. I keep a few tools handy for those just in case moments and just chalk it up to another one of those life annoyances…kind of like a Wisconsin driver doing 45 in the fast lane refusing to move the hell out of the way…they all do it and they all get in my way…why I don’t know but I no longer let it drive me insane. Even if I get around one…there surely will be another up ahead so what’s the point? I refuse to let em all ruin my day and shorten my life anymore.

So Linux isn’t an option as I’m ZB & XSI the same as Lemo, I also here the Vista argument, but what do you do with regards to 64 bit???

Is XP64 Ok or shall I go with Server 2003???

My new workstation is nearly complete & I would want to run a 64bit OS when ZB’s ready to follow suite, any ideas…
