Well, Maya’s still out of my price range. 
I don’t have Windows 2000 or XP, so I can’t play around with the Maya Personal Learning Edition either.

But Zbrush is by FAR the best deal going, ever!
And also don’t forget about Wings, a Nendo clone, for absolutely FREE. It would make a fine companion to Zbrush.
You’re right Lightwave seems very good. I didn’t want to imply that it isn’t one of the major players. I’m going to try the demo of all these and buy the one I like the most in a few months (unless as I fear, my taxes are going to be too high this year and I won’t be able to do that
