unable to follow instructions on mesh extraction tut

hey guys ,

been doing this over and over for the last 2 hours trying to achieve the results shown…

<<from the wiki pages>>

Meshes are extracted from layers with the Tool:Layers:Make 3D button. Your mesh will be extracted wherever the base mesh and the selection differ. Let’s take a look, by creating a medallion.

Start with a polymesh plane, subdivided in this example to about 1,000,000 polygons. Open the Tool:Layer menu, and press Tool:Layer:New. This will create and make visible a single active layer.

<< ok can do this no problem >>

Set the following: {Ctl|Brush:Std}} selected; Alpha:Brush 52 (star medallion alpha) selected; Stroke:DragRect selected; Draw:Z Intensity = 65; Draw:Focal Shift = -100. (This prevents the sculpt from ‘fading’ as it goes from its center to its edge.)

<< ok i can do this also>>
Draw a stroke out from the center of the plane.

<< done >>

Now press Tool:Layer:Make3D. A new subtool will be created from the difference of the base (flat) plane and the sculpted plane, and will be placed in the Subtool menu, as shown below. Also, the new subtool will appear onscreen, slightly darker because it is not the selected subtool.

<< can’t get this result, not even close…>>

The final extracted piece.

<< cant find the extracted piece in any menu>>

this is very disheartening… i am going nuts trying to get this result…

any help would be appreciated…

thanks

Can you show us what you got? Knowing what your result look like would really help in determining what happened.

sure not a problem…

here are the screen shots of what i am doing …

step 1.jpg

It seems you have to change the layer intensity from something other than 1, but you can set back to 1 after moving the slider and it works…weird, try various values for various effects even negative values

here is the zscript
Andreseloy

thanks for the Z-script,

I am at the fire house for the next 24hrs till tomarrow am unfortunatly so I won’t be able to get to my computer to watch it… I was able to run through the tut again trying the suggestion the was listed above and changing the ‘‘layer intensity other than 1’’ only lightened and darkened the medalion for me… the plane still is there and I still don’t see how this ‘’ extracts’’ the object out…

ill just have to wait to see the z-script though…

thanks

thats good the darkened say that you have succesful, now press simple brush for say something and again pick the subtool in the tool panel then you can see have now two subtool in group, clone the first and deletd it so you have now the new subtool created by layer.

ok finnally home… going on 2 days now trying to get a supposidly simple tutorial done …

i followed the diagram as i see psionic did it…

but i have no idea how he got the “3” section done… i still only have the plane and the medallion when i adjust the intensity values and hit “Make 3D”

i havent gotten a chance to watch the zcript yet…

shadowrunner

just watched the Z-script…

i am not sure what the point of the script was…

1> didnt follow the listed tutorial at all…
2> none of the menus as far as i can tell were accessed at all… so i have no idea what was going on…

i still have no idea what is going wrong and now i am more confused…

i managed i belive to get the results psionic talks about … unfortunatly following his instructions …

“It seems you have to change the layer intensity from something other than 1, but you can set back to 1 after moving the slider and it works”…

i am getting a morphed object…
a badly morphed on at that…

is the slider supposed to be moved around and set to 1 before u hit “make 3d” or is something being done afterwards to get the origonal extraction.???

It seems you need to toggle the visibility of the layer for it to register.

In short:

  1. Load your tool.
  2. Create a new layer.
  3. Draw something on that layer
  4. Toggle the layer visibility off/on
  5. Press the Make 3D button.

A new (unselected) subtool will appear.

Hope that does it.

OH MY GOD!!!

it works…

but, id like to point out that this isnt the way the tutorial on the company approved web page works…

i am eternally happy that someone worked out how to do it… gratz!!!

i think it stinks for us noobs who are stumbling around the pages trying to figure out how things work… i honestly was getting so frustrated that i was beginning to belive i was a moron… and couldnt follow simple instructions … when all along the laid out technique was incorrect…

how dissapointing…

many thanks for the vigilent people watching these posts and taking the time to answer in what must be there busy work scheduales…
my hats off to u all…

Seeing as we got ZBrush 3 hot off the presses there are bound to be some discrepancies between the Wiki docs and the released program. Give it a little time.

Glad you got it working. We are all only to glad to help out our local fireman. Speaking of which, the forums are on fire and you are doing nothing about it!!
