Clintus, kevphil, moonlitmaverick,

Thanks guys… great to hear there is some strong interest here in the ZB World. We think it’s a great fit – and will indeed try to show that in some new videos.

In the meantime, there are (rather dry, instructional) videos here:
GroBoto Boolean Videos
(Far right 2nd Row is probably the most complete)

They don’t show how fluid and flexible the workflow can be, but will give you a good idea of the initial ‘from scratch’ creation steps.

kevphil - yes, eventually there will be a PDF (you probably know that v2 has nearly 200 pages of PDF documentation. That said, it may follow the release by some margin (big job, tiny crew – as usual).

Best Wishes,
Darrel

Hi Everyone,

Hope the New Year is off to a creative & fulfilling start for all.

Here’s a simple model that rolled out while making a seat-of-the-pants demo video.

Two Videos that came out of that session.

Nice sculpts as expected! Thanks for the masking tutorial.

I’m just altering the base meshes so much that I need to remesh the whole thing sooner or later, then go for retopology. Difficult to express myself with parametric objects only. But lot of great ideas starting with groboto.

What I still don’t understand is the boolean operation. Please what should I do to see meshes in the modeling tools palette?

For the boolean operations check out this vids!! Great stuff!!!

Thanks michalis,

…and thanks LetoAtrell, for passing along that link.

michalis, In the Mac OS X version of GroBoto, the Export Panel is found in the Main Menu
MainMenu > File Menu > Export…:

Information on that panel and Mesh Settings can be seen here:
GroBoto Beta Docs - Mesh Export Panel

BTW – Any GroBoto Geometry can be converted to a mesh. It is not required that they include Custom ‘Boolean Clusters’. Simple spheres, cones, cylinders are fine.

The broadest range of forms certainly come from including Custom Booleans – but whatever works for your modeling/sculpting needs is OK.

I’ll put together a very short Video showing the Mesh Export steps. They are very simple but, as usual there are a few tips and tricks that will help.

Best Wishes,
Darrel

Thanks, I didn’t ask for the export menu, did I?
I’m already working on groboto meshes in zbrush and other apps.

Modeling Tool palette of groboto, the one you use on videos, you know. V3 b

“Boolean” instructions don’t worked for me. Invisible only meshes and orphan objects I get. Asking help for this only. Video isn’t enough, there’s something wrong with me maybe.

Update: I found my workflow, not like videos, thanks anyway.

Hello michalis,

Sorry for the confusion, I’m glad you have found a workflow that suits you. I thought you were also asking about meshes, but I must have misunderstood what you meant…

There are several different ways of creating a Boolean Cluster. I don’t want to get into too much of a GroBoto-methods discussion here (except when it relates directly to ZBrush).

Anyone else reading this, please stop by our GroBoto Forum if you have any questions, or just want to get the latest news. I will be posting more videos here showing a complete GroBoto-to-ZBrush sequence soon.

Also, please keep in mind that we are still in Beta, and things can change quickly. That said, the videos (in the second row of the page linked below) are all up to date with the current OS X version:

Hi Everyone,

Just a peek at some new in-line Mesh Smoothing/Stylizing options in GroBoto (applied at auto mesh-generation time).

This is a hasty example (no time, as usual)… but I wanted to pass something along.
The potential for exploiting GroBoto’s SeamNet structure has moved up a couple of notches over the last month… hope to get a chance to chase those options soon.

Very nice, now can we have Groboto 3 gold please… :stuck_out_tongue:

Lookng great Darrel…when is v3 for PC due?

Thanks jaystein777, RawSunlight,

GroBoto v3 OS X will be released late this month (yes, I know – Finally).

The Windows version should follow a few weeks after that (the good news is the Windows Beta will probably be pretty close to the Mac version much sooner than that).

I know I’ve said it before – we have every reason to work as hard and fast as we can – our survival depends on getting GroBoto v3 launched… we are doing absolutely everything we can to make that happen as soon as possible.

In the mean time, more results of our development & testing…

Important to note that this is not skillful ZB brushwork. The extra levels of detail, edges, ridges, cavities, are all inherent in the exported mesh. That, combined with the exported masking UV’s allow for the ‘teasing out’ and tweaking of those details with simple deformations & broad brushes.

I’m repeating myself on that point, I know – but in the last few months of development, the variety and quality of that ‘embedded’ detail has dramatically improved/expanded… the results of those same simple sculpting moves is ever-improving, and new sculpting options are emerging.

Very Cool Stuff here.

Hello Mahlikus,

Thanks. Cool stuff you have on the ZB4 Beta thread… could definitely see you having some fun with GroBoto’s tools.

Here’s another exploration. Trying to push GroBoto’s auto-mesh generator to the limits… a nightmare of complex intersections & patches. And indeed, this model does not work with some of GroBoto’s more specialized/newest meshing features… but we will have that sorted out quite soon.

No problem meshing with all of the standard stuff including edge loops, seam masking UVs, poly grouping, etc. Not the prettiest mesh (eventually we will be able to make it quite a bit more regular) – but beautifully faithful to the original geometry, and gorgeous in the hours saved vs. the unthinkable task of manually constructing this sort of thing.

… Responded nicely to the ZB Displace brush – raising and/or depressing patches in a subtle bowed fashion… lots of fine edge detailing pulled out in ZB as well.

I looked on your site but could not find videos that started “from scratch” putting together primitives. It occurs to me that GroBoto would be really good at kit-bashing, especially with its edge loop seams handling.

Great work, as usual.

pretty nice.
really nice mesh quality.

are you only able to work with primitive shapes to make the models or can you draw a shape, extrude it and then add booleans to it?

Hey kevphil & nerveink,

Thanks.

kevphil, I’ve just posted a new GroBoto-to-ZBrush video

It shows a simple Robot head (featured in the images below), being created from scratch in GroBoto , followed by auto-meshing & some very prelim ZB work. Not really a tutorial, but it provides a good overview of the process.

It’s an HD Video & very pretty high bandwidth so if anyone has trouble viewing it, check here instead for a smaller-sized version:
GroBoto v3Beta Modeling Videos (in about an hour or so - right now it links to the same HD version)

nerveink, everything in GroBoto is based on simple – procedural – geometric primitives. We don’t have any extrusion or other drawing tools, but you might be surprised how much the whole process can feel like drawing. It’s very likely we will have extrusion & lathe and a few similar options appearing sometime after the initial v3 release… but not right away.

These are really cool models. Love the forms. The construction takes me back to my days working with Real 3D’s CSGs. Yes, I am dating myself.

Hi poda,

Thanks, much appreciated.
I love the stylized and 'toon-ish pieces you’ve posted here.

Right, I could mention a few things that would reveal my length-of-tooth (and probably have)… We hope to infuse new freedom and flexibility into that ‘solid’ foundation and robust nature of CSG.

…and in case anyone had trouble viewing the HD version of that vid I posted earlier today, the smaller-sized version is up:

Thanks, GroBoto! I will check it out tomorrow. I appreciate the video very much.

Hey kevphil,

No trouble – been meaning to do something of that sort for weeks – many more to come. That one did not touch at all on some of the slicker modeling options like FlexForms, and snap/align/relate stuff.

I’m guessing you (and others here) may have seen those features in some of our older videos. However, it all needs to be updated, and needs to illustrate how it all works in concert – Primitives - Booleans - Snapping - Flexing - Mesh SmoothStyling - ZBrush Sculpting.

Meanwhile, here are some sweepings off of the laboratory floor here…
