Toy Design with ZBrush - Fine Art Collectibles, Vinyl, and Random Candy

Love it!

If you like to take a closer look at how I sculpt toys, now’s your chance!

Cheebs is a creature sculpt that I executed, live, in real time, for a class I was teaching this year. I ran the students through the entire process, from sketch, to turns, to rough model in Max, to ZBrush, and then back to Max for retopologizing. It was a quickie, and there was no time for tweaks, but he still turned out pretty cute!

If anyone would like to take a close look at the model, you can download it here in OBJ and ZTL formats:

Tons of toys getting made and prepped for rapid-prototyping. The orange one is a work-in-progress of Tim Stephson’s Creeper. The other two are my own designs.

Wow nice stuff! Do you print these yourself or sending to shapeways for example?

I work directly with/for Morpheus, in California. In addition to the basic digital sculpting, I also manage and engineer the files and prep them for output. I haven’t found another rapid-prototyping service that can match Morpheus’s range of technology, attention to detail and hand finishing and overall prices.

I do quite a bit of quality control for other designers who want to print a sculpt, but aren’t sure about the technical issues that need to be covered to make the print affordable and functional. Usually I’ll fix up and tweak problems for them, but sometimes a total rebuild is in order. Sometimes it’s just articulation that needs to be added.

Articulated sculpt of John “Spanky” Stokes’ Stroll character. All prepped to become a DIY vinyl toy. It’s sad that we had to remove his happy butt cheeks. It’ll be more flexible this way for customizers and that’s what’s important.

I am always excited and amazed to see your scupts and you renders. How do you go about your renders? Are you till working at TAD? Sorry I am all questions today.

Jon

Jon, no problem! No TAD this year. I opened a resin casting studio in town, Austin that is, to mesh with the sculpting and rapid-prototyping part of my business. Now I’m too busy for teaching.

Rendering? It’s all Vray in 3ds Max.

Have you ever produced anything physical based on your paintings? I know we spoke about it briefly… but I don’t remember the details. Or maybe this isn’t the right place to ask…

Love this last guy!

Checked out your site, thanks alot for all the info!
I have been thinking a lot lately about printing, and it answered and confirmed a lot for me:)

I’m thinking about making a line of digital sculptures to print and show/sell at conventions. I was thinking about doing it myself, until I found your site
So if I pay you guys you will split up the model in to the necessary pieces, shell it, get it printed, make the molds and do the molding in the quantity I ask for?

Santis, yes. We’re pretty much a one stop shop. I can help you make sure your sculpture is functionally printable, articulated for demolding, and shelled to reduce cost. We have a number of different rapid-prototyping technologies available, and can fit your budget. We can also make silicone molds and cast a small run of resin reproductions for you.

I’ve helped out a lot of sculptors just like you, people who had a pretty good digital model already, but didn’t quite know how to make it a reality.

This is really interesting to hear!!!

this is a very interesting thread! awesome works man! your house should be full of toys

Very cool stuff as always, man!

He looks great! The hoody with urban camo makes the scene. Plus he has a kind of a cute angry thing going on with fingers pointing in a way that says “you want some of this?!”

Nope, but I can dream…

I would love to visit your studio if I am ever in town and you have the time.

Jon

Jon, that would be terrific. How often do you get to Austin?

Churm has made the leap from digital sculpt to physical model. I printed this on an Envisiontec DLP printer and he’s perfect! He’s 5" tall but he looks HUGE because he’s so fat.

Very cool! :):+1:
