Back to the original question…
Actually… there is no choice. Not a real one. XSI, C4D, Maya, Max… at the end of the day, they are all the same. Different in the way you work with them, the same regarding the foundation. Phong shader are based on the phong shader principles regardless which package you use. Scripting languages might be different, but all deal with vertex, edge, spline, and so on. The point is, focus on the basics, and you can be familiar in all in a short period of time, Focus on the application itself, and you will master none. I just got VRay for C4D. A boat load of options. If I would not have dealt in depth with Mental Ray and it’s options, I would have had a hard time getting into VRay. But at the end of the day, VRay’s options and principles are the same. Buffers are Buffers and GI parameters are not different between render engines as they are derived from the same academic papers ;). The power is to understand the differences in the implementations and then use that knowledge to your favor. Again, go and get deep into the foundations of the matter, and then use whatever comes handy.
Cheers and good luck

Amen!!!

(Price?)

Price is secondary considering that a couple of jobs always pay for a commercial license and that the educational licenses in all the packages are more than affordable.
