Tako no Fukushuu (Revenge of the Octopus)

I really like the concept of your creature Ryan! Always good to see something different.
Either organic or mechanical part, everything is superbly modeled, textured and rendered. Thums up!!! :+1:

But one thing… Because of your “Tako no Fukushuu”, I don’t know if I’ll continue to eat one of my favorite foods: the “Tako Yaki”…
If I want my poor life to be spared by your monster… Maybe should I quit…! lol :o

Amazing! Very original idea and great work.

I like very much > 5*

Very nice work, I like the the modeling and texturing very much :+1:

Hurdy Gurdy Man - Thanks a lot - Man:)

slorpthegillman - haha…thanks for the nice plug Andrew  Teacher/PRman = great combo.

Mind Symbion - Thanks for such an enthusiastic comment! it is very appreciated. lol…being in San Francisco I’m kind of a sushi lover myself
(Shhhhh!). Next time you go out to eat try ordering ‘Tako no Fukushuu’ and see what they say

Marc Boulay - Thanks for the kind words and recognition.

Biser - Thank you.

This will be the first character on my upcoming reel…
I actually rigged the tentacles in order to pose them. For the reel I’m going to have him go from a flat position up into his striking pose as seen in this preview (click it to watch the short clip):

Here are some of the earlier WIPs from inside ZBrush:
(Thanks to the feedback from some classmates, I scrapped the skull design on the headplate)

Early head designs:
(Who knows…maybe there will be a whole colony of Tako:grimacing: . What do you call a group of Octopi?)

Here are a couple of Screen grabs from within Maya of the wireframe:

Wow! I’m going to be doing a search for any more material (ie creatures) that you’ve done. This fella has multiple original features. I like the colors, the contrast between mechanical and organic, the expression. Thanks for posting the wire and the head versions. If you have the time it would be neat if you gave us a hint at your research material, if you had any. Anyway, you really deserved a top row!
Gary

such awesome head design experimentation, now thats how its really done, the freedom to explore shapes like that is going to really push 3d graphics and peoples imaginations to the next level your def on the right path. ps- kothar vignar means ‘ash demon’ in draconian :stuck_out_tongue:

cool stuff. thanks for posting all the xtras! good call on losing the skull on the headplate. the animation is going to look great!

Very cool!

Love those twisded arms of his. Really warped but still makes sense and looks totally believable.

This is so amazing!!!

Congratulations!!!

Ryan,

Nice work man, that makes you the first person I know to get the top row, and you certainly deserve it with this post. They don’t make an emoticon for the nauseauting awe you inspire.

See you in class,
Brandon

cool!

hyper1 -Thanks a lot. I’m glad you’re really digging the character. For research I just collected every picture of squid and octopus I could find. Truly weird creatures. A lot of the armor ornamentation was freestyle sculpting.

konjo kothar vignar - Thanks again. Nice…your name is inpiring visions of a new beast…scary.
Name reminded me of the villian in Ghost Busters 2 - Vigo. lol

pete330 - No problem. I hope so

snak - thanks  the half tentacle arm was kind of a compromise between my initial design and a full humanistic arm…

yazz -Thanks:D

BrandonJones - Thanks a lot for the encouragment man. See you later.

byoxy - Thank you

Here is the initial concept sketch. You can seen that it was, at best, a pretty basic jumping off point to get me started:
(His arms were initially going to be these long spears. To feed, he would skewer his victims and the tentacle from within the spear would wrap around them like a python and squeeze out their blood…it would flow down the channels of the forearm armor and into feeding tubes…
I guess that would have been pretty cool too)

Ultimately I wasn’t feeling that so I mocked up the basic model and did a paintover in photoshop that I liked:
(you can see the final result ended up really close to this)

Here are a few of the color texture maps that I painted for the beast:

Yowzer…that’s one ugly momma. Excellent work!

Great job!! :+1: :+1:

Really excellent …

Your work inspires me

Very beautiful and very strong …

I like it so much !!!

That thing is sick! Most unique thing I’ve seen in a while!

Did you polypaint your character or paint the textures on your unwrap in photoshop?

armyoflee - Thanks a lot

Skelton2000 - Thank you. Some incredible work you’ve done, I love all those collectibles :+1:

Marc Boulay - I’m glad you like it so much. It makes me happy to know my work is inspiring people. Thanks again.

stalsby - Thanks  I usually just start out polypainting to get a good base going…this is especially true for skin. Then my texturing workflow really has me bouncing back and forth using ZApplink and straight photoshop.

Really nice work, there’s and excellent sense of character depth to the piece. Nice job on the textures as well.

Wayne…

this is seriously good stuff :+1:

Nicely done!
