This is so twisted, great work! Good call on the desaturation, this looks finished to me. Any more work will just be extra icing on the cake! Which there’s nothing wrong with having a sweet tooth, but what’s here looks great.

After looking at the first stages, I would love to know how you rendered it. It came out very clean. Is this is a 2.5d render with some good post ZB and Photoshop editing or did you export it to another 3d app?

Thanks for the comment James!..everything was built in max…the organic parts were then exported to Zbrush for sculpting and were then exported back to max and placed in the scene with all the tech and then rendered using MR. The rendered image was then imported into Photoshop and Zbrush(as a document) for further detailing.

Grotesque yet very beautiful  Amazing work for certain!

Very creepy and effective image! What’s actually happening here? It looks like an evil experiment that is actually draining the life energy from the victim. Or, perhaps, it could be some pathetic Frankenstein-like creature being created.

So, ZephyrChef, I gotta ask you because I dig post detailing in 2.5d mode. Are you telling me that you can render a 3d scene in MR or any other 3d app, with special effects, then bring it back into ZB as a document (with the 3d info still intact) to further detail in 2.5d? Don’t tell me that!

As an illustrator who only uses ZBrush with Photoshop, the main thing that keeps me from wanting to splurge $$$ on more 3d apps is the fact that I would lose the ability to edit in 2.5d after rendering.

If you’re only bringing it back into ZB and detailing it as a flat image, it seems like the detailing would lose depth and look flat. If that even works, I’ve got some digital paintings that are about to get pixolated!

Thanx for any info.

Thanks guys for the comments

It would be incredible James, but unfortunately not possible as far as I know.
The image is flat and holds no 3d info when I bring it back into ZB…though you could apply it to a 3d cube in ZB and kinda deform it to a degree:)

Now that’s an idea! So what type of post editing do you do in ZBrush once it’s rendered? I tried to take a digital painting into ZBrush with hopes that I could even do the flat sculpting, but it didn’t work. The actual pixels weren’t affected by the pixol sculpting. Are you actually using the simple brush, etc, or are you just…well…what the hell are you doing??? Surely, aside from using the depth illusions of pixols, there’s nothing you would use ZBrush for over Photoshop when it comes to 2d post editing. Spill the beans man!

(by the way, I’m amazed you didn’t get a top row nomination. have you posted it as a final draft yet, or is it still in w.i.p. mode?)

the image is imported into ZB as a doc making sure the doc size matches the image size…then I go into projection master and use the deco brush for the hairs and wrinkles…all of this is flat no 3d…then back to Photoshop for further editing

Ahh, I see, pretty cool. Thanx for the info and great work. I’ll quit trying to treat pixels like pixols for now…hehe…

about it needing to be finished. i don’t think that the comment was meant to be insulting. infact, i think it was the opposite. the composition is nice and shows alot of promise, but it needs finishing. the two characters have alot of localized detail while the rest of the scene lacks detail. the skin textures could use some more work on their materials. they need bump and specular. so do the wires, gears, electrodes etc. for that matter. they look plastic-e. “finish” is what makes the difference from this being a good scene or a great scene.

Yeah the comment was def not taken the wrong way…the image is a WIP.
Its just a mixup in communication thats all. Theres not a problem here.
