Startup Troubleshooting for ZBrush 3.5R2 Windows

Okay, looking at the contents of the downloaded zip file a little further, there are “Recovered Files”, “Zdocs”, and “Zmovies” folders, which do not get created either. I wonder if these should be added too?

Okay, I think I found the problem. I did a test “unzip” using the utility I normally use to unzip files – PowerDesk Pro 7. It seems it doesn’t create those empty folders. I tried PowerZip and it does. Both utilities are set to write subfolders.

Now the Zscripts folder shows up as empty in the archive, but it does get created. Not sure why – maybe someone knows? [edit] I know, it isn’t really empty – has one text file in it.

Would be helpful to know where and when it all goes kaputt

3 seconds after beginning the loading!
“zb.exe have seen a problem and must close”
the funny of the story is that 3.1 works like a charm
3.5 3.r2 don’t want to run

see here for my specifications

your problem seems to be covered (including instructions).

Can’t launch ZBrush 3.5 ?
When launching ZBrush 3.5 for the first time, you may get the following warning…“This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.” Alternatively, you might receive a “side-by-side configuration” error. If you get either warning then you’ll need to launch the vcredist.exe file that is included within the ZBrush3.5\Troubleshoot Help folder. This is a Microsoft installer which installs windows functions that are missing in your system.

Alas it’s not the case all is good installed!
vcredist.exe etc…

For those that are looking and have the same problem I did:-

Window freezes on first start, shows in taskbar and taskmanager but goes no further.

Add the 2 directories and all is well.

hopefully V4 will have a more polished installer.

Cheers all @ pix. … … now that my non installing grumpiness has lifted.

Concerning “grumpiness”:

ZBrush refines your being;)!
You don’t believe?
Well, this is my third reincarnation at the ZBrush forums. If my memory does not trick me, one of the others (zerebrom at that time) started in 2002, followed by zerebrush.
What can I say, both of them had been very “honest”, to describe it mildly.
Now, refined by the “ongoing experience called ZBrush” (sorry Ryan!), I can stay calm even when I can see no setup.exe:D.

And for the officials and support here - get some rest or whatever else pleases you!

Thanks to all

Hi Frenchy Pilou,
me and SpaceMan were having the very same issues and Support asked us to send dxdiag informations to the support center so they could compare it and see what could be the problem. Here´s the post on previous troubleshooting thread with instructions from Support:
http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showpost.php?p=607880&postcount=201
However, I don´t know how about SpaceMan but I haven´t heard from them ever since, but maybe your dxdiag file could help to speed things up.

THX I wil try that
I have idea that SP1 can maybe freeze the c++2008

Ok, after a third restart of my system and a re-extract it worked!!!

Wierd but wonderful…

Everything online and lookin good!

Adding the Vmem and temp directories fixed my problems! Thank you muchly!!!

What and where must be the “temp” directory?
(I have the Vmem inside 3.5r2 folder, but not the temp)

Does the Zbrush 3.5R2 folder can be anywhere and not obliged in the Programfiles folder?

Check the zstartup folder should be a tempfiles folder

Support are these correct folders and files for the zb3.5r2 folder and zstartup folder?

Spaceman

That is all correct.

Ok, most of us had to build this folder for ZBrush to run without error messages.

By default this folder (TempFiles) should be empty.
ZBrush writes some temporary data during launch into this folder, but after each session it should be emptied out.

ZBrush does NOT delete anything from that folder, making this not temporary files, but permanent files.
So it came quite natural that yesterday ZBrush 3.5R2 came on nagging about not being able (you know the rest).
Today I deleted the files within TempFiles:

  • images.mem
  • search.mem
  • thumbnails.mem
and ZBrush started again without problems.

So >> what we thought would have been a solution really is just a workaround for some quirk that still is present.

Should I make a support ticket out of this?

I’m seeing a zbrush.info file in the original vmem folder and the original TempFiles folder. Is this normal? Should the vmem folder stay filled with data, after shutting down.

I was able to see the interface once - when I registered the software. Since then, it never comes up.

Yes, these temp files have been added to all empty folders in order to make sure that these folder are created when un-zipped, regardless of which un-zipping program is used.
